Classic Warm Weather Fashions

Shelley modeled classic warm weather fashions for the Liberty House catalog in 1976. Liberty House was a chain of department stores and specialty stores that had its roots in Hawaii and had expanded into the U.S. mainland. In one spread, she wore a classic blazer, vest, blouse and skirt ensemble by Evan-Picone, a fashion label founded by Charles Evans and Joseph Picone. The label became known for ladies sportswear; but in the 1970s, it became known for dressing career women. And Shelley looked ready for any boardroom in her outfit.

Miss Browne

David Threlfall and Shelley Hack
in Frederick Forsyth Presents: A Casualty of War

Shelley appeared in the 1990 TV movie Frederick Forsyth Presents: A Casualty of War. She played Monica Browne an American horse breeder - or so she says. David Threlfall, Amanda Burton, Nadim Sawalha, Richard Hope and Alan Howard round out the cast. It was filmed in England, Germany and Yugoslavia.

Frederick Forsyth Presents: A Casualty of War
is currently available on DVD

The telefilm is currently available on DVD. It  can also be purchased as part of a set called Frederick Forsyth Presents - which includes the other TV moves from the telefilm series. They are Just Another Secret, Pride And Extreme Prejudice, The Price of the Bride, Death Has a Bad Reputation and A Little Piece of Sunshine.

Diagonal Flared Skirt

Shelley modeled the diagonal flared skirt for Wrights Idea Book of Trims in 1972. Made from assorted red-and-white checkered fabric which were diagonally sliced and accented with navy blue trim, the skirt was deemed by the booklet as "a smashing look." A navy blue long-sleeved top, a pair of red patent leather pumps and a ton of matching accessories finished the look. And Shelley was just lovely in it.

Golden Air

Shelley appeared in Seventeen magazine's July 1978 issue in an article entitled "Girl with the Golden Air." It was a sort of promo for her film at the time, If Ever I See You Again, which was her first leading lady role. By then, Shelley was already a famous Supermodel. She was known as THE Charlie Girl and had caught the attention of Hollywood. She as on her way to becoming a superstar.

From A Party

Designer Fashion

Shelley modeled Simplicity Pattern 8087 in 1977. It was a collared top with a front slash opening. It had long set-in sleeves with elastic casing and had a shirt tail hem. Her version of the style had matching lace trim around the neckline and on the sleeves; and she wore it with matching pants. And of course, Shelley was just stylish in it.

The Angel and the Comedy Legend

Shelley with Dick Van Dyke take a break
from filming Found Money on 1983

Shelley starred with Comedy Legend Dick Van Dyke in the TV movie Found Money a.k.a. My Secret Angel in 1983. The TV movie also starred another Comedy Legend, Sid Caesar. She found both actors/comedians "very generous to work with" but had to keep up with the duos pace. "You had to work so fast, because everything was left loose," she told TV Guide. "I felt like I kind of jumped on a moving train," she added. Shelley would again work with Dick Van Dyke in 1997 - as a guest star in his series Diagnosis Murder.

Beth and Hal

Shelley Hack and Alec Baldwin in Cutter to Houston, 1983

Shelley's second attempt at series TV was Cutter to Houston in 1983. It was about three doctors working in a fictional Texas town called Cutter. When they came across cases their clinic couldn't handle, they asked for assistance from a big city hospital in Houston, Texas - hence the title. Her co-stars were Jim Metzler, who had won critical acclaim for his work on the movie Tex the year before, and Alec Baldwin, a new and unknown actor at the time. The series had good scripts and had a great cast but, unfortunately, it was cancelled before it could find an audience. Let's hope it's released on DVD soon.

Gorgeous Cover

Shelley was on the cover of the November issue of Seventeen magazine for 1971. And it remains one of the most beautiful covers the magazine ever had and has. It featured Shelley in a fabulous party dress, looking like a million bucks.

Sisterly Support

Shelley with her sister Shawn

Shelley's sister Shawn traveled West to California in the summer Shelley was cast as Tiffany on Charlie's Angels. "She's fun to have around," Shelley said of her sister's visit. Acting as her sister's factotum, Shawn was there for moral support and acted as Shelley's unofficial secretary during her stay. "She cooks dinner for me and takes messages," Shelley added.

More Sleepwear

Shelley modeled sleepwear fashions for the Liberty House catalog in 1976. Libery House was a chain of department stores and specialty stores that had its roots in Hawaii and had expanded into the U.S. mainland. Shelley modeled a cute babydoll-cut nightgown by Jennifer Dale. It was sheer and delicately touched with romantic lace. The elasticized shoulders made it possible for women to wear it off the shoulders.

She also modeled an alluring and figure-flattering long shift gown with dainty lace trim by Olga. And Shelley wasn't just lovely in both, she was breathtakingly gorgeous.

Sure-Fire Hit

an article about Jack and Mike, 1986

Shelley's 1986 TV series Jack and Mike "looks like it has a chance to take off fast to become a sure-fire hit" as one writer put it. The series had Moonlighting as its lead-in and was being compared to the Harts from Hart to Hart and to Nick and Nora from The Thin Man movie series. Tom Mason played restaurateur husband Mike opposite her journalist wife Jackie. The premise of the show - a yuppie couple so busy they had to schedule time together. The series was off to a good start but struggled in the ratings and was eventually cancelled after one season. Let's hope it makes it on DVD soon.

Moneysaver Coupons from Family Circle magazine, 1978

Shelley appeared on Family Circle's Moneysaver Coupon for fabric and trim in the mag's February 1978 issue (as well as on the accompanying spread called "Make it Ruffled, Make it Quilted, Make it Smocked, But Make it Print!") If readers wanted to sew the clothes she modeled, they could get a 15% discount on printed fabrics and matching trims with the coupon provided by the magazine. Several fabric stores spread thoughout the US participated in the promo.

On the coupon, she modeled a sexy smocked camisole top in a floral print trimmed with velvet ribbon and buttons over a tiered maxi skirt in two different floral patterns and trimmed with velvet ribbon as well. Shelley was one fabulous floral-fest.

Wake Up Feeling Good

Shelley appeared in an ad for Sealy Posturepedic beds in 1974. The beds were advertised as so comfortable "you'll wake up feeling good." Just like Shelley in the ad, consumers were guaranteed a great night's sleep and maybe even a Supermodel smile on their faces in the morning. And Shelley looked so fresh in the ad, she was like a breath of fresh air.

Angel Tiffany Welles

Shelley got the part of Tiffany Welles, Charlie's 5th Angel, in 1979; and a publicity campaign was launched to introduce her to the public and to generate interest on the hit TV series which suffered a slump in the ratings during the past season. Many publicity pics were taken with the Angels in different looks and garbs. In one set of pics, the Angels were dressed in colorful satin karate robes. Fully made up and posing in front of a fan (a late '70s must), Angels Shelley, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd projected the new glamorous image the show was taking on.

Tiffany Tackles Theater

After her stint as Tiffany Welles on Charlie's Angels, Shelley made a risky career move and decided to tackle theater. Along with Meredith Baxter-Birney and Annette O'Toole, she headlined the play Vanities by Jack Heifner. Staged at the Westside Playhouse in Los Angeles, the play was filmed for TV and was aired as part of HBO's Standing Room Only series. The play was a hit among cable TV viewers and Shelley's performance came as a surprise for many because she did very well in her role as Mary. Her risk paid off big.

and a sexy camisole over a tiered skirt

In one pic, Shelley modeled spring 1978's newest skirt - a quilted, printed and easy-shaped skirt. Wearing the skirt with a blouse and vest in colors picked up from the skirt's print resulted in one sensational outfit. A khaki belt, a pair of khaki open-toed pumps and a cute little bag finished the look; and, of course, Shelley looked sensational in it, as always. In another, she modeled a sexy smocked camisole top in a floral print trimmed with velvet ribbon and buttons. With it, she wore a tiered maxi skirt in two different floral patterns and trimmed with velvet ribbon as well. Shelley was one fabulous floral-fest.

Career Move

Shelley in a publicity pic from 1993

In the '90s, Shelley began her transition from actress to international media consultant. As her acting career winded down, she began delving into grassroots politics in Los Angeles. Later on, she began taking an active role in political fund raising, as well as election organization and registration. Her career move culminated in the creation of Shelley Hack Media Consultancy (SHMC), a media consultancy firm that worked in pre- and post-conflict countries. SHMC produced the first-ever televised presidential debates held in Bosnia-Herzegovina. For ten years, SHMC helped develop unbiased television, film, and associated media projects in war-torn and developing countries throughout the world. Great going, girl.

Catalog Model

thank you to kathyloghry.blogspot.com for posting the pic

Shelley appeared in many catalogs during the '70s and she was a regularly featured model in the Sears catalog. Her wholesome good looks was just the right image for Sears. She modeled everything from swimwear to sleepwear. She was one busy girl.

Summer Smash

Shelley with Lisa Taylor in a spread for Vogue, 1974

Shelley appeared on the pages of Vogue in may of 1974 in a spread called "Summer-Country Smash". In the portion called "Shirt-Dressing Short-Sleeved for Summer", Shelley modeled a couple of fabulous shirt dresses that the mag recommended for summer that year. The pics were taken at the Amelia Island Plantation on Amelia Island, Florida.

Shelley modeling shirt-dresses

Shelley modeled the "shirt-dress you buy in pieces" - that being a white knitted polo shirt top and a white sharkskin pleated skirt, both by Jaeger. A white leather belt was the recommended accessory of choice - as well as a tan. She also modeled an easy, breezy shirt-dress that was perfect for summer. The beige-and-white striped dress was by Mario Forte for Rona. And Shelley looked so chic and summer-ready in both outfits.

Shelley's 1983 TV movie Trackdown: Finding the Goodbar Killer was reviewed by Michael Gardner last April 4, 2015 on Mike's Retro Reviews on YouTube. Mike has reviewed a variety of stuff - comic books, TV and big screen features. Thanks very much to Mike for saying good things about Shelley in his review. Here's what he said:

"Even though her brand was badly damaged after her experience with Charlie's Angels, she actually turned in a number of fairly strong supporting performances soon afterwards. She gave a very good performance as a kind of an icy TV critic, icy TV executive in King of Comedy, a film I recommend. And she also gave a fairly strong performance here. And she really does put a lot of effort into it. Obviously, she had a lot more riding on it than George (Segal) here. So obviously, it was important for her to give a good performance; and to Ms. Hack's credit, she does."

Tiffany and Mindy

Shelley appeared on the pages of Sears spring summer catalog for 1975. In one spread, she modeled "dress-length versions of great sports tops". In other words, sport shirts that were long enough to be worn as dresses. She modeled the polo-shirt dress and the T-shirt dress. With her in both pics was another model who was about to become a huge TV star as well. Pam Dawber would shoot to stardom in 1978 as Mindy McConnell in the hit TV series Mork & Mindy. A year later, Shelley would shoot to stardom herself as Tiffany Welles in the hit TV series Charlie's Angels.

Shelley as Jackie

In 1986, Shelley got the lead in another TV series about a yuppie married couple trying to balance their marriage and careers. Shelley's character was a journalist named Jackie Shea and the series was called Jack & Mike. Let's hope it finally makes it to DVD.

She wore it with a khaki round-collared blouse (with a ribbon around the collar), a matching bright red skirt and khaki wedge sandals; and she looked sensational. In another, she modeled a calico-print quilted kimono coat trimmed with tricolor binding. And with it, she wore an deep orange turtle neck top and a bright red skirt in. Neutral colored wedge sandals and cute bags that matched her outfit finished her look.

Cover Girl Preppy

Shelley was cover girl preppy on the cover of Mademoiselle in March of 1973. Mademoiselle was one of the leading women's magazines in the last century and was geared towards smart young women. Although primarily a fashion mag, it also published great works of literature as well as articles about women's issues and the like. After a decline in advertising revenues, the magazine was discontinued and its last issue was released in November of 2001. The end of a great era.

Film Debut 1977

Shelley with James Burge and Woody Allen
in a scene from Annie Hall, 1977

Shelley's first foray into film came via the classic Academy award-winning 1977 film Annie Hall which was directed - and starred in - by Woody Allen. She played a "street stranger" who comes across Woody's character Alvy. Her scene was brief, but it remains one of the most memorable in the entire film. James Burge played her boyfriend in the same scene.

Sophisticated in '76

Shelley, sophisticated in an ad for Krizia in 1976

Shelley was a picture of sophistication in an ad for Krizia back in 1976. Krizia is an Italian fashion label founded by Mariuccia Mandelli in 1950. The brand's product line includes ladies' clothing, handbags, footwear and perfume. Shelley's ad appeared on the pages of Italian Vogue in March of 1976. The easy, breezy floral ensemble she wore was in juxtaposition with the stylish turban around her hair, the Mediterranean sandals on her feet and the cigarette in her hand. Add to that the "old world" setting she was in and the crystal ashtray in the floor, Shelley was one sophisticated image indeed.

Leading Lady

Shelley as Jennifer Corly in If Ever I See You Again, 1978

Shelley's first leading lady role came in the 1978 film If Ever I See You Again. The film bombed in the box office; but has since garnered its share of fans who love romantic films. Joe Brooks wrote, starred and directed the film. He cast Shelley in the role of Jennifer Corly as soon as he saw he saw her walk into the auditions. "When Shelley walked into the room, I turned to my assistant and said, 'She's got it!'" Joe told one reporter.

Fresh-Faced Beauty

Shelley was one for the freshest faces around when she hit it big on Charlie's Angels in 1979. She was one of the up-and-coming new stars to watch out for. Her Charlie perfume ads were a huge success and Hollywood was the next logical step for her to go.

Earth-Themed Fashions

Shelley appeared on a spread called "Give Earth A Chance" on Seventeen magazine in 1971. The spread featured Earth-themed fashions for every girl to wear. Shelley modeled an apple-themed cardigan and shorts ensemble by Niki of Greece and a body-cling shirt by Stuffed Shirt. Her sash was by Elegant.

With Mom and Dad

Shelley was and is a very private person. But in 1979, Teen Beat magazine showed pictures of Shelley with her mom and dad. Shelley's dad often gave her advice on her career choices; while her mom was very supportive of her modeling career (having been one herself).
