of her iconic Charlie perfume ad

HAPPY NEW YEAR WORLD!!!

The Glamorous Shelley Hack

Shelley in a glamorous publicity pic, 1986

Shelley was among Hollywood's most glamorous stars in the 1980s. In 1986, she starred in the TV series Jack and Mike where she played Jackie Shea, a famous Chicago journalist who was trying to balance her work and home life - a dilemma experienced by many women in the 1980s as it became more and more common for women to join the workforce (not to mention get higher and higher positions). Shelley loved doing Jack and Mike. "I saw in the script a modern woman who really loves her job and really loves her husband and is trying to balance the two," Shelley told ET in 1986. She added, "It's not easy balancing a job you love and a husband you love very much."

The Gentle Suit

Shelley in an ad for Jacobson's, 1973

Shelley appeared in many ads for Jacobson's in the 1970s. In 1973, she appeared in one that featured the Gentle Suit by Belle Saunders for Abe Schrader. The classic American suit was in a softly muted red/white/blue check fabric and bound with French ribbon. It was for traveling anywhere in classic chic. An understated belt, a clutch and wingtip pumps completed her outfit. A cloche hat, button earrings and white gloves finished her look. And Shelley looked downright chic.

THE Quintessential Charlie Girl

Let's take a another break from the Cutter to Houston pilot episode, another commercial break that is; and look into Shelley's Charlie perfume commercials. Shelley was and always will be THE Quintessential Charlie Girl. She embodied all the ideals of the brand. She was independent, bright, chic and confident. She catapulted the brand (as well as herself) to iconic status when she began endorsing it. No wonder she was THE Charlie Girl for a very long time - for almost seven years, in fact. She appeared in many Charlie perfume print ads as well as many Charlie perfume commercials. Below are eight of the commercials she was did for the brand. You can find them all on YouTube. Let's hope more of her Charlie commercials surface.

And, of course, since Shelley was so iconic as THE Charlie Girl, a commercial paying homage to her iconic turn as the Revlon Superstar Model was created in the late 1980s. A Charlie commercial with Linda Evangelista as Charlie Girl was made in the 1989. It featured Linda and a clip of Shelley from her very first Charlie perfume commercial in 1976. A modeling icon paying homage to another modeling icon in an iconic advertising campaign. Wow!

Glamorous New Angel 4

a closeup of Shelley wearing a sheared Persian-lamb jacket
from Los Angeles magazine, December 1979

Shelley rose to superstardom in 1979 when she joined the cast of Charlie's Angels. Her casting dominated entertainment news around the world and her image appeared everywhere. In December that year, she appeared in the cover of Los Angeles magazine. As Charlie's most glamorous Angel, she was decked in the most glamorous item of clothing at the time, fur. Inside the magazine, she appeared in the spread called "Angel in Furs" which featured her in the most glamorous coats and wraps for that season.

a closeup of Shelley wearing a Russian sable coat
from Los Angeles magazine, December 1979

Fur was very popular until the early 1980s and was considered a luxury item reserved for the most privileged of women, the more mature set. But this spread featured pieces that were designed for and marketed to the younger generation, namely Shelley and her contemporaries. She wore a sheared Persian-lamb jacket by Pat Iuto. Underneath, she wore a black chiffon blouse with multicolored metallic threads by Givenchy over a pair of red wool flannel trousers by Valentino. Over her shoulder, she sported a Norwegian-fox fling. A single oversized earring finished her look.

And Shelley also wore a reversible dyed-black-to-natural-gold shawl-collared Russian sable coat outlined with black nylon poplin by Revillon. Underneath, she wore golden evening separates by Calvin Klein. A fancy gold belt, a matching scarf and gold strappy high-heeled evening sandals completed her outfit. Golden earrings and a gold hair pin finished her look. And Shelley looked and oozed glamour.

Angel Tiffany Welles

Shelley in a publicity still for Charlie's Angels, 1979

Shelley became Angel no. 5 Tiffany Welles in 1979. She was cast because she blended really well with Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd in terms of looks and style - according to Aaron Spelling. Acting-wise, she had enough experience to handle the shows scripts. It was too bad her character was initially severely underused. She was given little to say and do at the beginning of the season. The reason, according to inside sources, was that she couldn't act - which is nonsense, because she did  fine job on the TV movie Death Car on the Freeway (Check out her scenes with Hal Needham; they're delightful.), on her guest stint on the Love Boat and on the filmed for TV play Vanities (for which she received glowing reviews from critics). So before (Death Car), during (Love Boat) and after (Vanities) Charlie's Angels, she came up with good acting performances. So how come they said she couldn't act when she was on Charlies Angels? I wonder.

Would Tanya Roberts, Shelley Hack and Cheryl Ladd
have been Charlie's Angels 1980 team if Jaclyn Smith left the show?

Anyway, she did get more to say and do in the latter part of her Angels season; but the ratings had already dipped and Shelley became the fall guy. Too bad, she turned out some fine performances in the latter episodes of that year. In fact, if she was given more exposure at the get go, she would have lasted seasons longer and Jaclyn Smith would have left by the end of that year (as was reported). Tanya Roberts, Shelley and Cheryl would have made a great Angels team if Tanya was still hired after Jackie left.

Holiday Outfits 2, 1970

Shelley in a spread for Seventeen magazine, 1970

Shelley appeared in many issues of Seventeen magazine from the 1960s to the 1970s. In 1970, she appeared in their December issue, in a spread that featured flouncy holiday outfits for young ladies that season. She wore a black body-hugging long-sleeved turtle-necked top over a quilted and ruffled floor-length skirt adorned with rickrack and eyelet details. Both were by Raymodes. A grosgrain sash, a matching hair accessory and a beaded choker with an enamel pendant by Sandor finished her look.

Shelley also wore a scoop-necked peasant-inspired top with short puffed sleeves and adorned with eyelet details over a floor-length striped skirt. Both were by Duchess. A grosgrain sash with a bow completed her outfit. Bows on her hair, a fabric choker, a bracelet and a ring by Trifari finished her look. And Shelley looked ready for holiday season 1970.

Happy Holidays 2018!!!

Shelley in yet another bogus Holiday version
of her iconic Charlie perfume ad

The holidays are up and coming; and it's time to bring out all those holiday trimmings and make everything feel festive. Gift-giving is a yearly tradition looked forward to by everyone... Well, the one on the receiving end at least. Don't forget to give a little something for your loved ones to show them how much they mean to you.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ONE AND ALL!!!

Shelley, Sexy in Gold

Shelley at a star-studded event in 1980

In February of 1980, Shelley attended the event The Love Boat Honors Helen Hayes at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The event, which honored The First Lady of Broadway, was a star studded affair, attended by the biggest stars of television, stage and the movies. Aside from Shelley, fellow Charlie's Angels Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd were in attendance. The Love Boat cast was naturally there, as well as Loni Anderson, Joyce DeWitt, Mark Harmon, Dennis Cole, Melissa Gilbert, Jimmy Baio, Michele Lee, Britt Ekland, Bobby Sherman, Phyllis Diller, Phil Shivers and Jane Wyman.

Shelley in a sexy gold gown at the 1980 event

Shelley attended the event with her constant date at the time, writer John Leone, and was a standout that night. She wore a sexy gold form-fitting gown with a halter neckline and a bare back. The gown was similar to the body-hugging number she wore on the Charlie's Angels episode "Dancin' Angels" but was cut totally different. The gown was held together by straps that sexily crisscrossed her back. Simple gold jewelry and a gold clutch finished her outfit. With minimal-look makeup and straight and smooth hair, Shelley was every inch a glamorous Hollywood superstar babe.

Holiday Special Effects

Shelley appeared in many beauty campaigns for many cosmetics companies during her tenure as Supermodel. In 1975, she appeared with fellow Supermodel Beverly Johnson in a spread called "Holiday Special Effects" for Avon's December 1975 catalog. They both modeled Avon cosmetics anyone could use to create Sparkling Eyes and A Glowing Face - great holiday '75 looks. Shelley was drop-dead gorgeous in the spread.

Springtime Charlie

Let's take a break from the Cutter to Houston pilot episode, a commercial break that is; and look into one of Shelley's Charlie perfume commercials. Shelley first became famous for being THE Charlie perfume Girl. There were others before her, but it was Shelley who captured the imagination of many worldwide. A few months after she began endorsing the brand, it became the no. 1 scent in the entire world. Shelley was (and is) the quintessential Charlie Girl - gorgeous, sexy, young as well as vibrant and confident. She was, and actually still is, an inspiration to many worldwide.

Shelley appeared in many Charlie perfume commercials. In 1981, she appeared in their Springtime in Charlie Country ad campaign. It featured the brand's latest collection of cosmetics for the spring of 1981. The whole collection - colors, packaging and mood - was based on a painting created especially for the brand by American artist LeRoy Neiman. Everything from the makeup kits to the perfume bottles themselves were decorated with his art. Shelley, of course, was gorgeous in the commercial.

But this spread featured pieces that were designed for and marketed to the younger generation, namely Shelley and her contemporaries. She wore a vented opossum coat, dyed petrol blue, by Karl Lagerfeld over a silk charmeuse tunic and trouser ensemble by Fendi. A "fur scarf" - dyed fur puffs in netting - also by Fendi completed her look. Shell inspired gold earrings (which Shelley kept and wore many times, to many events) and a air of tinted sunglasses finished her look.

Shelley also donned a natural fox stroller, with bands of natural gray and red fox, by Kasper. She wore it over a gunmetal slip gown paired off with a reptile-textured evening jacket, both by Bill Blass. Silver earring and footwear finished her look.

And Shelley wore a broad shouldered burgundy sheared beaver coat by Christian Dior over a woman's suit by Bastile. A fabulous belt and matching footwear completed her look. The earrings, a clutch and leather gloves were just the right finishing touches for her look. And in all three outfits, Shelley oozed glamour.

Glowing Reviews, 1981

Shelley with Meredith Baxter Birney and Annette O'Toole
in the play Vanities, 1981

Shelley starred in the Jack Heifner play Vanities in November of 1980 with Meredith Baxter Birney and Annette O'Toole. It was filmed for TV as part of HBO's Standing Room Only series and was aired in 1981. Shelley immediately jumped at the opportunity to play Mary in it after she left Charlie's Angels. She had no stage experience but was ready to take up the challenge.  “I don't know how I got the guts to go right into a play immediately after leaving the series,” Shelley said. "I started doing theater for the first time in my life although I'd never been on a stage before." Shelley surprised critics with her wonderful performance and she received received glowing reviews.

Holiday Decorating

Shelley in another bogus Holiday version
of her iconic Charlie perfume ad

The holidays are up and coming; and it's time to bring out all those holiday trimmings and make everything feel festive. Decorate your home with all that holly and ivy, with all those lights and satin ribbons. Put up that tree and and decorate it as well. Hang all those bells and  balls and make it look as merry as possible. Now wouldn't that bring anyone into the spirit of the season?

Bridesmaids Telefilm 1989

In 1989, Shelley appeared in the TV movie Bridesmaids along with Sela Ward, Brooke Adams and Stephanie Faracy. The film is a very pleasant watch, very apt for the season we're in. The rapport and chemistry between the principle players in this film is apparent and a delight to watch. No wonder it was a staple on cable TV in the 1990s.

Misses' Dress

a closeup of Shelley from the See & Sew pattern no. 5832 package cover, 1977

Shelley appeared on many package covers for Butterick's See & Sew pattern line. In 1977, she appeared on the cover of pattern no. 5832, a misses' dress. The long loose-fitting dress was below mid-knee in length and had a shaped band collar, a front neckline slit and pockets in the side seams. It also had three-quarter length kimono sleeves, side hemline slits and a top-stitch trim. A self-tied belt made the dress hug the waistline. Gold earrings and bracelets finished her look. And Shelley looked sensational and ready for any day-to-evening affair.

Cutter to Houston Pilot 17

screen captures from the Cutter to Houston pilot episode, 1983

Shelley's second foray into series TV was Cutter to Houston. It was about three young doctors from the world-famous Texas Medical Center in Houston who were recruited to run a small hospital in the fictional rural town of Cutter, Texas. Jim Metzler and Alec Baldwin played the other two doctors. Jim played idealistic GP Dr. Andy Fenton, who grew up in Cutter and is glad to be home. Alec played internist/ladies man Dr. Hal Wexler, who is getting through his probation, having been relegated to Cutter for being a little too fast and free with his prescriptions. And Shelley played Dr. Beth Gilbert, an ambitious surgeon on temporary assignment in Cutter and aspires to be a heart surgeon in Houston.

To continue, at home, Beth's telephone is ringing. It's the middle of the night and she is sound asleep; but the ringing rouses her and she answers the phone. She says she'll be there and hangs up. Back at Cutter Community Hospital, Ginny Bickum lies unconscious in a station-wagon. She's been rushed there by that friend who found her in her home at that state. It's probably due to the complications she's been experiencing in her pregnancy. Andy and Nurse Patty put her on a stretcher and rushes her into the hospital. Beth arrives and joins them.

A tiny evening bag by A Little Bit of Heaven was tucked between and side and arm. Her hair was pulled up and topped with a matching evening hair accessory. In both looks, Shelley oozed glamour.

A Must-See

Shelley with the cast of "The Assassin"
a Tales from the Crypt episode

In December of 1994, Shelley appeared in the hit HBO series Tales from the Crypt. The series was based on the horror comic anthology series of the same name which was published in the 1950s. The crypt keeper introduced and ended every episode during is entire run.Shelley appeared in season 6 in the episode called "The Assassin" along with Corey Feldman, Jonathan Banks, Chelsea Field and Marshall R. Teague. The episode is about a CIA "cleanup" crew tasked to find and dispose of a former CIA assassin gone AWOL - they find his wife at home instead. The episode is one of the best of that season and Shelley's performance was outstanding. If you can get it, watch it.
