Quite a Whirl

Shelley in 1979

Shelley became Charlie's Angel no. 5 in 1979. She was already a Supermodel when she was cast; and the fact that she was the spokesmodel for Charlie by Revlon boosted her chances in landing the part. The headline "Charlie Girl becomes Charlie's newest Angel" was playing around in Aaron Spelling's mind when he was considering her. "Yesterday, I was a schnook, and today I can't get across the street" is how Shelley described her sudden rise to superstardom. "It has been quite a whirl," she said.

Her printed A-line skirt stopped just above the knee and had an attached velvety and dainty belt at the waist. Peal earrings finished her look. Shelley looked romantic and very feminine.

She was also asked to wear her own glasses throughout the film, which she must have welcomed as she was blind as a bat without them. The filmed bombed at the box office, but Shelley was unfazed. She took it as a learning experience and moved forward.

Shelley appeared in number of commercials for TreeTop fruit juices in 1988. The commercials she made were personal; and she was shown causally dressed, in a very casual setting and casually talking to the people in front of their TVs. It was filmed at Rancho de las Fresnos in Hidden Valley in October of 1987 and aired in the spring of 1988.

Her spiel for the commercial went as follows:
I feel better when I do the right thing
like when I excercise instead of putting it off
or when I work hard instead of geting nothing done...
And I feel better when I drink TreeTop.
It's 100% pure juice in new flavors I really like.
And those juice drinks have added sugar, artificial flavors...
I don't want that.
That's why I choose TreeTop.

Gorgeous New Angel

gorgeous and sexy Shelley in a publicity pic from 1978

When Shelley joined the cast of Charlie's Angels, tongues immediately began wagging. So much was said about her not being Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd's choice for the role. So much was said about her not getting along with Jackie and Cheryl. So much was said about her not being beautiful enough or sexy enough to become a Charlie's Angel.

a writeup about Shelley becoming a Charlie's Angel

But Shelley was chosen by Jackie and Cheryl. They felt she was someone they could work with. And Shelley did get along with Jackie and Cheryl. They even threw her a birthday party on the set when her birthday came up. And, if you think about it, she didn't come in to fill the part vacated by the most beautiful or the sexiest of the Angels. Kate Jackson wasn't considered the most beautiful or the sexiest of the Angels, so why did Shelley have to be all that. She was supposed to be smart like Kate's Sabrina Duncan and she filled that part perfectly.

Shelley in the late-2000s

Shelley at the Hollywood Show, 2009

In the late-2000s, Shelley, who had been very busy with Shelley Hack Media Consultancy from 1997 to around 2008 (she spent years traveling around Europe and East Asia), had decided to stay put for a while in the US. While she was at it, in 2008, she guested on Oprah Winfrey's show in a segment dedicated to her Charlie Girl persona. And a year later, she made a very rare appearance at the Hollywood Show in Burbank, California, where she met her West coast fans (as well as, for the very first time, her fellow Charlie's Angel Tanya Roberts). A year after that, she attended the 2010 Super Mega Show and Comic Fest held in East Fairfield, New Jersey, where she met her East coast fans.
