Glamorous New Star

a closeup of Shelley from a promo pic from 1980

Shelley was cast as Tiffany Welles in Charlie's Angels in 1979; and everyone was so excited to see THE Charlie Girl become a Charlie's Angel. But by 1980, she had moved on. She signed a one-year contract with the show which had a three-year option; and she opted to leave the show and move on to other things after a year. "I never expected to be there more than a year and I wasn't," Shelley told TV Tales: Charlie's Angels in 2002. "So I did my year and I moved on," she added, "That was just fine. That was plenty for me." But the publicity jump start she got from Charlie's Angels made her a Hollywood superstar nonetheless and she was considered one of the glamourous new luminaries of tinsletown. Also, she was determined to make something of her big break. In the 1980s, she was able to work with some of the best actors and directors in Hollywood like Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Dick Van Dyke, Sid Caesar, George Segal, Joseph Ruben and Terry O'Quinn. She made the most of her big break.

for Main Street, 1978

Shelley began modeling in 1964 during her teens, during her summer vacations. After finishing her schooling, Shelley signed on full-time at her modeling agency, Ford Models Inc., and eventually became one of the Supermodels of the era. In 1978, she appeared in ad for Main Street which featured the Ballerina blouse. It was a top with a flourish all its own. It had a fullness falling from the gathers at the neck, continuing to become full sleeves that gathered on to dainty buttoned cuffs. The romantic-looking blouse, which buttoned down at the front, came in dreamy cloud colors like white, pale blue, pale peach and lavender. A pair of jeans finished her fabulous but casual look. Shelley was Supermodel gorgeous as always.

Holiday Dressing C

Shelley in a pic from a spread
for Seventeen magazine, 1964

Shelley began modeling in late 1964. Shelley was discovered by A&P supermarket heir and publisher Huntington Hartford at a debutante ball when she was just 14 years old. It was her first time to be invited to one and her mother instructed Shelley, "If  any older men bother you, go powder your nose." And she kept powdering her nose all night because "A guy kept bothering me," Shelley said, "He kept coming up to ask, 'Have you ever thought of being a model?' " After careful consideration, and with the help of her mother, a former Conover model, she finally decided it was a better summer job than waitressing. They went to went to New York to see Eileen Ford (a friend of her mother's) for representation. In 1964, Shelley appeared in a spread in Hartford's Show magazine, in the September 1964 issue (check out: The First). In November of that same year, her face was on the covers of both Seventeen (check out: Seventeen Cover) and Glamour (check out: First Cover) magazines.

Shelley in a spread for Seventeen magazine, 1964

Shelley's very first Christmas spreads for Seventeen magazine was for the mag's December 1964 issue. In the spread called "Hit Knits," she wore knitted pieces that could be worn at any of the holiday parties for that season. She wore The Sissy Sweater, a new kind of sweater that was making an appearance that season, just in time for the festivities. It was a pullover sweater top that was ruffled around its slightly plunging neckline and at the end of its long sleeves. By Rosanna, it was of mohair and wool knit and could be worn over a pair of pants or a skirt. A ribbon on her hair accessorized her look. She also wore The Embroidered Shell, a night-time knitted sleeveless top bisected by openwork then edged with tiny rows of crochet trim. By James Kenrob, it also had two embroidered rosebud embellishments on the front. A matching skirt finished her look - although the mag also recommended it be worn under a late-day suit. A ribbon on her hair and a bracelet accessorized her look. And in both, Shelley looked like a big hit indeed.

Jackie in 1986 B

a closeup of Shelley
from a promo pic from the 1980s

Shelley starred in her third TV series in 1986 Jack and Mike. The series was initially called Jackie O'Shea as it was going to be a star vehicle for Shelley (producer David Gerber wanted to give her her own TV series.) Shelley was going to play the title role, a woman journalist who had a supportive husband waiting at home - kind of like a reverse gender role thing which was a fresh idea in the 1980s. Tom Mason was brought in to play the husband as he had a good chemistry with Shelley when they played boyfriend/girlfriend in the TV movie Kicks. But Tom wanted the characters to be more equal, so the focus of the series changed from just Jackie to the marriage of Jackie and her husband Mike. It was retitled Our Kind of Town and Jackie's husband was given a bigger role. When it aired, it was again retitled Jack and Mike, with both Shelley and Tom getting equal billing.

a fun newspaper encircle-the-word game/puzzle
(with the answers) about Jack and Mike, 1986

Jack and Mike was about a busy married yuppie couple who lived in Chicago and found it hard to find time to be with each other. Jackie Shea was the star columnist at a fictional newspaper called The Mirror. Jackie's husband, Mike Brennan, was a successful restauranteur who owned and managed three restaurants around Chicago. The series aired right after the hit Moonlighting and debuted to decent ratings. It also received decent reviews, with a few scathing writeups here and there. The series looked like it was in for a long run when it was suddenly canceled to the disappointment of fans.

Shelley first became famous in the 1970s as THE Charlie Girl.  In 1976, she was hand-picked to represent the Revlon Charlie brand, as she was the embodiment the brand's ideal – gorgeous, sexy and young. Makeup artist Rick Gillette recalls, "Shelley Hack was really the perfect girl for Charlie. I remember when Revlon creative director David Leddick had Steen Svensson shoot the first presentation with her that got her the contract." They shot a commercial with her and when it debuted, it was an immediate and immense hit. By 1977, Charlie became the #1 fragrance in the world (the first American-made international bestseller) and Revlon sales figures passed the $1 billion mark. Shelley THE Charlie Girl had catapulted to icon.

Newest Heavenly Recruit

Shelley in a paparazzi pic, 1979

Shelley became Angel no. 5 in 1979 when she joined the cast of Charlie's Angels. Her character was Tiffany Welles, a classy Boston-bred policewoman who was the daughter of one of Charlie's oldest friends. She was chosen from among a bevy of beautiful actresses which included Priscilla Presley, Kim Basinger, Michelle Pfeiffer, Connie Sellecca and Shari Belafonte. In May of 1979, Bond Girl Barbara Bach was announced as the newest Angel. But it was quickly retracted and, by late-May of that year, Shelley was announced as Charlie's newest Angel. The newest heavenly recruit came with the approval of not just executive producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg but also of incumbent Angels Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd.

Her casting sent the press into overdrive. The interest in Charlie's newest Angel was so intense, that so many articles about her, as well as news features, came out and appeared around the world. "I couldn’t believe it. What was I doing in the evening news?" Shelley exclaimed at the time. Of course, some were true and some were, well, not. But publicity was publicity, and the frenzy generated so much interest in her, it catapulted her to Hollywood Superstardom before she even filmed an episode of the series. The headline "THE Charlie Girl Becomes Charlie's Newest Angel" was heard all over the world. Shelley was the newest "It Girl" in Hollywood.
