Hat And Scarf

Shelley appeared on various spreads throughout the mag Modern Needlecraft in 1971. In one spread, she modeled a crocheted hat and scarf set and a ring belt made from yarn. A turtleneck sweater, a smart skirt and matching leggings finished her look. Shelley looked sensational.

Shelley joined the cast of Charlie's Angels in 1979, as Tiffany Welles - Charlie's newest recruit. As soon as it became official, she became world famous. Everyone wanted to get to know more about THE Charlie Girl who was now Charlie's newest Angel. Her face appeared on magazine covers all over the world.

Shelley appeared on many spread throughout the JCPenney Fall and Winter 1972 catalog. In the spread for junior misses, she modeled a couple of body suits. Body suits were popular in the 1970s as fashions were more body-conscious and body-hugging. They were usually worn with a skirt, shorts or pants.

She wore the Layered Look Body Suit which looked like your favorite sweater and shirt combination which had long sleeves and a back zipper. Matching clips on her hair finished her look. She also wore the Turtleneck Ribbed Body Suit which had raglan sleeves and a back zipper. A matching skirt and footwear finished her look.

Cutter to Houston Pilot 1

Shelley's second foray into series TV was Cutter to Houston. It was about three young doctors from the world-famous Texas Medical Center in Houston who were recruited to run a small hospital in the fictional rural town of Cutter, Texas. Jim Metzler and Alec Baldwin played the other two doctors. Jim played idealistic GP Dr. Andy Fenton, who grew up in Cutter and is glad to be home. Alec played internist/ladies man Dr. Hal Wexler, who is getting through his probation, having been relegated to Cutter for being a little too fast and free with his prescriptions. And Shelley played Dr. Beth Gilbert, an ambitious surgeon on temporary assignment in Cutter and aspires to be a heart surgeon in Houston.

THE Charlie Girl

Shelley was THE quintessential Charlie girl and was Revlon Charlie's image model from 1976 to 1982. Charlie was one of the first mega-successful lifestyle brands in the world. The phenomenal success of the brand was due in part to Shelley's unforgettable image. Although there were a slew of other Charlie models before her, it was Shelley's image that catapulted the brand to iconic status. Everybody in the world wanted to be a Charlie Girl because of Shelley. Her portrayal of the confident, fabulous and independent woman who is unapologetic and happy about that fact captured the imagination of many worldwide and made Charlie one of the best-selling brands in history.

Modern Woman

Shelley appeared on many mag covers during her time as one of Charlie's Angels. In 1980, she appeared on the cover of Modern Screen, in their "TV's Country Charmers vs. City Swingers! Who Turns You on?" issue. Shelley, of course, was categorized as a City Swinger. And why not? She was (and still is) a good example of a typical modern woman from the city. Her Charlie Girl and Charlie's Angel personas merely emphasized the fact.

Velveteen Skirts and Pantsuits

Shelley appeared in many catalogs for Sears in the 1970s. In 1975, she appeared in the Sears Wish Book For The 1975 Christmas Season catalog. She appeared in the spreads called "Soft Pretty Blouses To Go With Velveteen Skirts" and "Pantsuits Knit Of Orlon Acrylic."

She wore the Solid-Color Blouse - which had long sleeves, was trimmed with a front inset of cotton lace and was shirred at the shoulders and above the button cuffs - over the Solid-Color Skirt - which was a flared, 4-gore style skirt of cotton velveteen. A necklace finished her look and Shelley looked fab.

She wore a couple of knit pantsuits that were great for day or evening. Both pullover-style tops were printed and had long sleeves; but one had a turtleneck, while one had a V-neck with collar. Both were worn over smooth-textured pants that had elasticized waists and slightly flared legs. And Shelley looked sensational in both.

Angel Hair

Shelley became Angel no. 5 in 1979, taking over Kate Jackson's empty spot on the TV megahit Charlie's Angels. And like all Angels before her, she became the hottest item in Hollywood, appearing on tabloid and magazine covers with her fellow Angels and solo. In October of 1979, she appeared on the cover of Hair Styles & Care - a magazine that featured the latest hair and makeup trends. Shelley shared her beauty tips to readers.

At A 1987 Event

Shelley attended the 24th Annual Publicist Guild of America Awards in March of 1987. It was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Shelley was currently starring in her very own TV series at the time, Jack and Mike. The paparazzi took many pics of her.

In attendance at the event were other stars of the moment. In fact, she was photographed with other TV superstars, namely Angie Dickinson who played Pepper Anderson in the groundbreaking phenom Policewoman and Gerald McRaney who played Rick Simon in the 1980s hit Simon & Simon.

Shelley appeared in many ads for Gay Gibson during her modeling days. In 1972, she appeared in an ad for Carol Ann-Gay Gibson, a line of clothing distributed in the Spanish-speaking countries. The Spanish-language ad featured the same models and fashion pieces that appeared in a 1972 Gay Gibson ad - in English of course. She wore a skimmer dress came with its own matching tie-on belt. Matching big bow pumps, hose, hair pin and bracelets finished her look. And Shelley had a lot to smile about; she looked fabulous.

She's Monica Browne

in Frederick Forsyth Presents: A Casualty of War, 1990

Shelley appeared in the 1990 TV movie Frederick Forsyth Presents: A Casualty of War. She played Monica Browne an American horse breeder - or so she says. Watch the film and find out who she really is. David Threlfall, Amanda Burton, Nadim Sawalha, Richard Hope and Alan Howard round out the cast. It was filmed in England, Germany and Yugoslavia.

Shelley appeared many mags for McCall's. In the McCall's Fashion Series magazine Shawl, Ponchos, Capes for spring 1976, she modeled the Checkerboard Pattern cape, snug knit cape with checkerboard sides and Mandarin collar and edgings. It featured crocheted frog closures. She wore this one over McCalls shirt pattern 3550 and Time And Place pants, as well as a scarf by Vera and earrings by Kenneth Lane. Shelley looked sensational.

Bright Beauty

Shelley was a fast-rising superstar in the late 1970s. She had become one of the Supermodels of the decade and had gained worldwide fame as THE Charlie Girl, Revlon's best-selling brand. Naturally, Hollywood had taken notice and she was getting offers left and right. But Shelley wasn't, and isn't, your typical dumb blonde Supermodel; she was and is one bright girl. She has a degree from Smith College and, by that time, she was one of the highest-earning models in the world. She could afford to be choosy when it came to selecting acting roles. She knew she was green and needed to learn her craft. But the momentum her Supermodel status gave her meant she had to lean fast.

She wore a cream-colored acetate satin shirt that had a detachable self tie, pointed collars, cuffs and long sleeves over a pair of sage green front-fly pants with flared legs. A matching sage green jacket with a V-slit neckline, front button closing and self-buckle belt could be worn over everything. Matching open-toe wedge footwear finished her look. Shelley looked fab.

She wore another cream-colored shirt - but this time with a sage green, pink and yellow floral print - over pair of cream-colored front-fly pants with flared legs and a matching cream-colored jacket with a V-slit neckline, front button closing and self-buckle belt. Shelley looked sensational.

Shelley appeared in Simplicity Young Ideas Catalog in 1972. The catalog featured fashions readers could make themselves - young and up-to-date fashions. She appeared in many spreads throughout the catalog and one of them was called "Crate Your Own Playthings... For Fun And Sun", which featured tops and shorts for young misses to play around with that summer.

Shelley modeled pattern 9939, an easy-to-make, super simple top and shorts ensemble. The top was a simple cropped halter top and the shorts were simple short shorts with an elasticized waist. Matching or complementing fabrics could be used and appliques could be added as a personal touch. She also modeled pattern 9884, super simple short shorts and suspenders. It was a pair of summer shorts with patch pockets and an elasticized waist that could be made with matching suspenders. Shelley looked ready to play those fun summer games.

Private Superstar

Shelley became a bona fide Superstar in 1979 when she joined the cast of the phenomenal hit TV series Charlie's Angels. She was very grateful, very excited and very much aware of the lucky break she got when she signed on to be part of one of TV's biggest hits. Although a very private person, Shelley was aware of the situation she was in and knew that, thrust into the limelight, her life would be put under a microscope. She was ready for that; but she didn't want it to affect her family. After all, "I'm the one who signed on for this job, not them. I'm the one who chose to pursue the limelight, not them," she said. She was determined to keep her mother and siblings from the negative effects of stardom.

The Streaker

Shelley appeared in many ad campaigns during her stint as a Supermodel in the 1970s. One of those campaigns was for Ms. Lee, a clothing line for young women. In their 1975 ad which featured "The Streaker" design, she modeled Ms. Lee's denim jeans design that had an inside-out denim stripe from hip to cuff. Teaming them with Ms. Lee's matching western jacket and striking quilt shirt was sure to turn heads and bring praises from admirers. A pageboy cap, a matching scarf and wedged espadrilles finished her look. Shelley looked oh so '70s hip.

Determined

When Shelley left Charlie's Angels in 1980, she was determined to make something out of the career path she had chosen. She went to New York and met with people from the William Morris Talent Agency regarding other opportunities on TV and the movie. She ended up accepting the role of Mary in the Jack Heifner play Vanities which was about three high school cheerleaders in three different stages of their lives and friendship. Meredith Baxter-Birney and Annette O'Toole co-starred. The play was filmed and aired as part of the HBO series Standing Room Only. And her gamble paid off big time. Shelley received glowing reviews from critics and her detractors alike.

Shelley appeared many mags for McCall's. In the McCall's Fashion Series magazine Shawl, Ponchos, Capes for spring 1976, she modeled the ultimate Poncho. It had knitted cable and crocheted popcorn panels in the front and back. It had big squares on two sides with cable centers and deep crocheted borders. It had crocheted edging and a fringe trim bottom. She wore it over a shirt by Lady Manhattan and pants by Time And Place. Shelley looked sensational.

Shelley joined the cast of the hit TV series Charlie's Angels in 1979. It was about three gorgeous and glamorous female detectives working for a man they never saw face-to-face, a man named Charles "Charlie" Townsend, a millionaire recluse. And, of course, the Angels in the show were always donned the latest fashion and beauty trends. In fact, their beauty secrets were of keen interest to so many that Beauty Handbook shared them to its readers, their hair and makeup secrets that is.

She wore a dusty cranberry and gray on cream floral and polka dot pattern print blouse over a pair of plaid pants in he same color scheme. Over that she wore a smock jacket in dusty cranberry. Cram colored open-toes footwear finished her look. And Shelley looked sensational.

She also wore a ruffle-trimmed cream-colored blouse. It had a front-button closing, long sleeves, self-ruffled edges on a round collar and button cuffs. It could be worn with any of the other fashion pieces featured in the spread. And, of course, Shelley looked super in it.

Charlie 1981

Shelley was THE quintessential Charlie Girl. She was the embodiment of the ideal woman portrayed in the perfume commercials - gorgeous, sexy and independent. Revlon Charlie was one of the first lifestyle brands that promoted the independent women. The ad campaign Shelley was involved in idealized the woman who was free to walk out, make her own choices and be happy about them. It inspired women to wear the pants in her own life.

Tiffany Welles

Shelley joined the cast of Charlie's Angels in 1979. She was cast as Tiffany Welles, the daughter of Charles Townsend's good friend, a police chief in Boston, and a Latin teacher. Tiff graduated from the Boston Police Academy with top marks and worked at the Boston Police Department before joining the Townsend Agency. She  took over from Kate Jackson's Sabrina Duncan at the agency as Charlie's Angel no. 5.

Shelley appeared in many knitting books and magazine when she was an in-demand model in the '60s and '70s. In 1971, she appeared in the magazine Woman's Day Knitting Book. In one spread, she modeled a mesh crochet top and shorts ensemble that was great to wear over body stockings for ballet or any kind of dance. Add a pair of sunglasses and flats and any girl was ready to go from dance class to anywhere.

Coveted Role

Shelley landed a coveted role in the early 1980s - that of Cathy Long in the Martin Scorsese film The King of Comedy which had Robert De Niro and Jerry Lewis as lead stars. She was to play the Jerry Lewis' character's talent coordinator. Shelley was excited about the part she landed. "I couldn't work because I read for The King of Comedy and got the part," she said, "The picture was delayed and I couldn't take a chance of doing anything else." And her gamble payed off. Not only did she receive glowing reviews for her performance, the film - although not a hit when it was released - has slowly gained a following and is now considered one of Scorsese's finest work.
