Plaids 'n Lassies

a closeup of Shelley from an ad for Vicky Vaughn, 1972

Shelley has appeared on many ads for Vicky Vaughn. Vicky Vaughn was the junior clothing line of R & M Kaufmann, Inc, a clothing manufacturer that  produced high quality garments at affordable prices (It was eventually sold to Russ Togs in 1969.) In 1972, she appeared in an ad called "Plaids 'n Lassies" which featured lively layered looks in woven acrylic with rib knit combos. Shelley wore The Sweatered Whirl, a rib-knit sweater top paired with an above the knee whirl skirt. A matching belt and footwear finished her look. And Shelley looked fab in it as usual.

ET Interview '86 A

Shelley's third foray into series television was Jack and Mike in 1986. The show explored the life of Jackie Shea and Mike Brennan, a married couple with busy careers trying to make their marriage work. The yuppie phenomenon exploded in the 1980s when more and more women began entering the workforce and climbing up the corporate ladder on their own, holding positions previously reserved for men only in past generations. Before the show premiered, Shelley was interviewed by Entertainment Tonight to talk about her new venture. "I saw in the script a modern woman who really loves her job and really loves her husband and is trying to balance the two," Shelley told ET. She added, "It's not easy balancing a job you love and a husband you love very much."

I don't have to do a series," Shelley confessed to ET, "You know, I'm fine doing television movies; and I started to produce my own, which is what I eventually want to do" (which she' doing now, by the way). But then she read the script for Jack and Mike and liked it so much, she signed on the dotted line. Shelley always admitted she loved working on Jack and Mike, but the series, unfortunately, had a short run (sleeper hits were unheard of then). Let's hope it makes it on DVD soon.

Alexander's Ads

Shelley appeared in many ads for Alexander's in the 1970s. Alexander's was a department store chain that included 16 stores at its peak. It catered to well-to-do middle class customers and offered designer clothing and high-quality private label goods at discounted prices. During its heyday, it had more sales per square foot than any other department store in the US.

Celebrity Tennis '86

Shelley along with other celebrity guests braved the heat of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the McDonald's-Sunday Mail Celebrity Tennis event in April of 1986. The other stars in attendance were Cagney and Lacey star Martin Kove, model-actress Deborah Raffin, Medical Center's Chad Everett, Mission: Impossible's Peter Graves and Lyle Waggoner from The Carol Burnett Show and Wonder Woman - just to name a few. In addition to the tennis event, the Hollywood stars were going to participate in a farewell dinner show where the sponsors will donate $10 for every guest to a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Malaysia's historical and cultural landmarks. Asian fans came in droves to get a glimpse, as well as autographs, of their favorite Hollywood stars.

Shelley appeared on the pages of the the Simplicity Home Catalog Fall/Winter 1972 issue. In the spread called "Sure Bet: The Dress," she modeled unbeatable little dresses that were great for fall and winter that season. The sure winners were another way to look great, flirty and feminine when readers didn't feel like wearing pants. Shelley wore pattern no. 5130, a princess-cut plaid dress with long sleeves and crisp white collars that had a matching bowed ribbon. She also wore pattern no. 5176, a tank dress that looked like two separate pieces but actually wasn't. A matching hat and a pair of boots finished her look. Shelley looked fab in both.

Honing Her Craft

Shelley in a 1980s promo pic

Shelley was a busy actress in the 1980s. After opting to leave Charlie's Angels in 1980, she went full-time into an acting career. She appeared on stage, TV and in the movies. She immediately tackled stage after Angels via the Jack Heifner play Vanities and gained critical praise for her work. Other stage plays soon came after (Elizabeth Diggs's play Close Ties, Garson Kanin’s Born Yesterday and John Krizanc's Tamara at the end of the decade) and she got critical praise for them as well. She starred in the feature films Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy and Joseph Ruben's The Stepfather and got glowing reviews. In the series Cutter to Houston and Jack and Mike, she got mixed reviews but was generally praised for efforts. Shelley was determined to honing her craft.
