Book of Sewing '72 A

a closeup of Shelley from a pic
in The Complete Book of Sewing, 1972

Shelley appeared in many sewing books when she was a model. In 1972, she appeared in The Complete Book of Sewing. The book taught readers the basics of sewing and many things readers could do to create one-of-a-kind fashion pieces that would surely make them stand out. One of the outfits she modeled was a plaid long dress with an empire waist and short puffed sleeves. Romantic ruffled details around the neckline and bodice made her dress interesting. Matching hose and footwear as well as a fabric bangle finished her look. Shelley looked fresh as a daisy.

Promising TV Series

In 1983, Shelley starred in her second TV series Cutter to Houston alongside Alec Baldwin and Jim Metzler. It was about three young doctors  who were recruited to run a small hospital in the fictional rural town of Cutter, Texas. Shelley played ambitious surgeon Dr. Beth Gilbert, while Alec played internist/ladies man Dr. Hal Wexler and Jim played the idealistic GP Dr. Andy Fenton. All three had their reasons for being there, a stepping stone for Beth, probation for Hal and a thank you from hometown boy Andy, who was sent through medical school by Cutter.

Cutter to Houston was one of the most promising TV series that was on for that season. Shelley had honed her acting skills on stage and had been picky about the TV and movie roles she had been accepting and it seemed to have paid off. As one writer put it, "The surprise is that everybody (in the show) is very good, especially Hack, who may stage the acting profession's comeback of the year in this show."

A Guide to Gauze

for Simplicity Fashion News,
May 1976

Simplicity Fashion News was a monthly pamphlet Simplicity came out with to showcase their latest patterns. The Simplicity Pattern Company had been manufacturing sewing patterns since 1927 and had allowed fashionistas on a budget and sewing aficionados to create clothes in a reliable manner. Shelley appeared on the pages of Simplicity Fashion News May 1976 issue. She appeared in the spread called "A Guide to Gauze", which showcased designs that were made from gauze-soft materials. She wore pattern number 7430, a sailor collar pullover top with embroidered details and matching pants. Matching casual footwear, shell choker and shell bangle finished her look. And Shelley looked chic and fabulous.

released in 2007 and 2017 respectively

In 2019, the blog Genre Snaps gave the episode praise for its storyline, its ultimate twist ending as well as its perfect casting. Of the performers, the blog said, "Of course, Shelley Hack was great. I never understood why she wasn't a bigger star. The others were also very good in their roles. That includes, to my surprise, Corey Feldman. I'm convinced he could still come back big given the chance." Read it at:

In June 28 this year, the site Bloody Disgusting listed it as one of its 5 Tales of Queer Terror from TV Anthologies. It listed it down as one of the past horror anthologies that "are transparent with their representation and help articulate the characters’ frightening life experiences." As it turns out, Shelley's Janet McKay is a character ahead of her time. Read it at:

Getting Fit Through Biking 1

a closeup of Shelley from a pic from Self magazine, 1983

The 1980s was the decade when fitness and health became a number one concern for many people worldwide. Fitness videos, gyms and sports activities became very popular and keeping fit became part of many people's daily routines. And Shelley was keeping herself fit as well. In August of 1983, she appeared on a spread for Self magazine about bikes. She modeled and tested bikes that were great for keeping fit at any weather. She tested the Exercise Bike, a stationary bike that could be used for days when the weather kept one indoors. It had an adjustable resistance mechanism that intensified one's workout as one improved. And, of course, Shelley worked out in style, in sleepwear by Ralph Lauren.

Angels 1980?

If Jaclyn Smith left Charlie's Angels after season 4,
would the Angels lineup look like this?

Jaclyn Smith was the last of the original Charlie's Angels when Shelley joined the show in 1979. At the time, it was rumored that Jackie too, like Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett, wanted out and wanted to leave after season 4. It was written that she said, "If Shelley goes over well with viewers, there's no reason why I couldn't walk off the show. Then next year, a replacement for me would be found and viewers again would have the opportunity of seeing a new face." It was rumored that, like Kate, Jackie had been turning down roles due to her Angels schedule.

a writeup about Jaclyn Smith possibly
leaving Charlie's Angels as well, 1979

If Jackie did leave, Tanya, teamed up with Cheryl and Shelley, would still have made a great Angel. Gorgeous girl-next-door Kris Munroe, sophisticated intellectual Tiffany Welles and wild street-smart Julie Rogers would have made a fresh new Charlie's Angels team. They would have looked great together and would have meshed well together too. If it did happen, what would the opening have looked like? Something like this?

Once upon a time, there were three little girls
who went to the police academy,
one in San Francisco,
one in Boston,
the other in New York...

And they were each assigned very hazardous duties.
But I took them away from all that
and now they work for me.
My name is Charlie.

Sewing & Fashion 1973 B

a closeup of Shelley from a spread
on Woman's Day Sewing & Fashion 1973

Shelley appeared on the pages of many issues of Woman's Day magazine. Woman's Day magazine is one of the Seven Sisters magazines that have catered to married women with children rather than single working women. The magazine featured homemaking and crafts, food and nutrition, health and fitness, beauty and fashion advice and articles. Shelley appeared on the cover, as well as on the pages, of Woman's Day Sewing & Fashion magazine in 1973 with featured fashions and style ideas for the modern married woman.

On the cover, she wore coordinated  separates which were also featured inside on a spread called "Travel-Happy Coordi-Knits." The fashion set was deemed a "non-stop wardrobe color-keyed for morning to midnight wear." The coordinated separates she wore were ideal for traveling as they were easy to mix-and-match with each other as well as other pieces. The suit, pants and evening skirt were Butterick Pattern no. 3243 - while the surplice blouse was Butterick Pattern no. 6898. Matchng necklaces, footwear and a shoulder bag finished her look. And in both looks, Shelley looked sensational.
