Shelley with Jill Schoelen and Terry O'Quinn in The Stepfather, 1987
Shelley starred in the horror thriller The Stepfather in 1987. The movie was a moderate success when it was initially released; but it has since gained a cult following due to its unique plot, its pacing and the superb performances of its main cast (Shelley, Jill Schoelen and Terry O'Quinn). Shelley was cast by the film's director Joseph Ruben who was impressed by her work in Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy. She didn't have to audition for the role, because Ruben thought she was easy on the eyes and had a naturalness that was perfect for the role. And Shelley received glowing reviews for her performance in this cult classic. The film is currently out on DVD.

Currently out on DVD as well is The Last Slumber Party, another horror thriller released a year after The Stepfather; but, unfortunately, it is not in the same league. In fact, this low budget horror flick wasn't actually scary. Probably the most interesting thing about the film was the dialogue uttered (at around 43 minutes into the film) by one of the characters that went, "Who’d you think it was, Shelley Hack?" The Shelley Hack reference came out of nowhere and just didn't have anything to do with the film at all. Well, reference or not, the movie could actually be quite entertaining if it's not taken too seriously. Some consider it "the best bad movie ever made" as well as a camp classic.
