Knitty Midi Mania

Shelley in a spread for Seventeen mag, 1971

Shelley appeared on many spreads for Seventeen magazine throughout her modeling career. In Feb of 1971, she appeared in a spread called "Knitty Midi Mania" where she modeled fashion separates that could be made by readers. Anyone with knitting needles and an artistic fashion flair could make their mark in the fashion world with the pieces on the spread.

Shelley wore the Divide and Conquer pieces made up of a scoop-neck midriff-bearing crop top with short sleeves and a matching midiskirt. Picot edging and frilling adorned the scooped neck, the end of the sleeves and the hem of the skirt. Accessories like a choker by House of Joy, a statement knitted belt, sandals by Sbicca and various hair clips finished her look. And Shelley looked spectacular.

A Star for A Star

A Hollywood Walk of Fame Star for Shelley Hack!
Wouldn't it be great if it were real?

Shelley's first brush with superstardom was as THE Charlie Girl, as one of the Supermodels of the 1970s. Being one of Revlon's most famous brand ambassadors (ever!) made her (and her fabulous smile) familiar to everyone worldwide. Then, she joined the cast of the phenomenal hit series Charlie's Angels and her fame grew even bigger. After appearing in and getting critical praise for her work on stage (Vanities, Born Yesterday...) and in film (Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy and Joseph Ruben's The Stepfather), she began delving into politics and the role of media in politics which culminated to the creation of SHMC (Shelley Hack Media Consultancy). SHMC was a company that internationally specialized on projects that focused on the intersection between media and the development of civil society (And its initial project was the first-ever televised political debate in Bosnia.) It also focused on doing institution building in pre- and post-conflict countries, developing unbiased TV, film and associated media projects in the said countries. She worked extensively in Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Shelley also helped  the largest media conglomerate in Eastern Europe develop and build the latest film studio complex in the region. Currently, she is co-president of Smash Media productions and has been producing family-friendly movies that entire families can enjoy watching over and over. Now with accomplishments like that, don't you think that she deserves a Star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well?

Glamour Mag Model

Shelley's first modeling assignment was for Glamour magazine in 1964. She appeared on the cover and the pages of the mag's November issue that year. She was discovered by millionaire/publisher Huntington Hartford at a debutante ball where he urged her to try modeling. He eventually talked to her father, telling him Shelley was "the new face." In September of 1964, she appeared in Hartford's magazine Show, in a photo spread that caught the eye of Eileen Ford of Ford Models Inc. She went to New York (with her mother Patricia, a former model herself and an acquaintance of Ford) met with the model agent and signed on. From there, she became one of the most successful Ford models in history.

Cutter to Houston Pilot 2

Shelley's second foray into series TV was Cutter to Houston. It was about three young doctors from the world-famous Texas Medical Center in Houston who were recruited to run a small hospital in the fictional rural town of Cutter, Texas. Jim Metzler and Alec Baldwin played the other two doctors. Jim played idealistic GP Dr. Andy Fenton, who grew up in Cutter and is glad to be home. Alec played internist/ladies man Dr. Hal Wexler, who is getting through his probation, having been relegated to Cutter for being a little too fast and free with his prescriptions. And Shelley played Dr. Beth Gilbert, an ambitious surgeon on temporary assignment in Cutter and aspires to be a heart surgeon in Houston.

Dr. Andy Fenton is driving his jeep and in a rush to get to Cutter Community Hospital. There had been an accident in one of the town's oil rigs and many of the workers who've been hurt have been brought there. Dr. Hal Wexler, the only doctor on duty tonight, has his hands full as workers who've sustained minor injuries have been coming into the hospital. Andy arrives into a room full of injured and rowdy men but had to tell Hal he had to leave immediately. He needed to go to the site of the accident where more men have been hurt, seriously hurt. Dr. Beth Gilbert arrives soon after, amid the workers who've been attended to and are now rowdily singing their woes away. Hal's relief at seeing her there is short-lived as she too is going to the site of the accident, with Andy.

Easy To Care For

Shelley appeared in several ads for Wrangler in the 1970s. In 1974, she appeared in an ad for Wrangler Sportswear, an affordable line of clothes for men and women. Shelley wore a floral-print short-sleeved jacket and pants ensemble over a matching plain shirt. A beaded necklace, a mix of fun beaded and band bracelets, sandals and a floppy fisherman's hat finished her look. And Shelley looked like a million dollars in her mid-priced duds.
