She elevated the brand from something women "aspired to" into something women were "inspired by." Shelley's Charlie Girl image - liberated, independent, confident - touched a nerve in many women during an era when women's lib was gaining ground. She was a representation of a woman who was free from the restrictions society imposed on women at the time; and what's more, happy about it all.
