Shelley Was A Hit

a writeup about Shelley and her Charlie's Angels castmates
from Midnight Globe, 1979

When Shelley became Charlie's Angel no. 5 in 1979, she instantly became the hottest news item. Everyone wanted to get to know THE Charlie Girl who was now a Charlie's Angel. Of course, as THE Charlie perfume Girl, she already had a lot of fans - everyone loved her in those Revlon Charlie commercials and print ads. But now that she was an Angel, everyone wanted to get to know her even more, especially on how her relationship with her new co-stars (incumbent Angels Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd) was going so far. The tabloid Midnight Globe said that the new Angels team got along just fine as was witnessed firsthand. The tabloid flew a correspondent to the Caribbean, where Shelley's first CA episode was being filmed, and he saw for himself how the girls got along.

Knitting Book, 1971 B

Shelley appeared in many knitting books and magazine when she was an in-demand model in the '60s and '70s. In 1971, she appeared in the magazine Woman's Day Knitting Book. In one spread, she modeled a dress made from what was called striated or space dyed yarn, the newest look in yarn back then. She wore a hooded button-up-he-front dress with long sleeves. And Shelley looked 1971 fashionable.

from  A Perry Mason Story: The Case of the Wicked Wives

In December of 1993, Shelley guest starred in A Perry Mason Story: The Case of the Wicked Wives, a TV movie which was a tribute to Raymond Burr, one of Hollywood's most respected actors. Raymond Burr, who famously played Perry Mason in the TV series which ran from 1957 to 1966 and in 26 TV movies, died in September 1993. As a tribute to him, a Perry Mason TV movie was made. But to honor Burr's legacy, the part of Perry Mason wasn't recast. Instead, a new character was brought in, Anthony Caruso (played by Paul Sorvino) who was Mason's good friend. Cast regulars Barbara Hale and William Moses came back. And as guest stars, Supermodels were cast. Shelley Hack, Beverly Johnson, Kim Alexis, Maud Adams and Kathy Ireland played the "wicked wives." Eric Braeden and Paula Marsh rounded out the cast. The telemovie was released on DVD in 2016. It was also released on DVD in Spanish as Perry Mason: El Caso de las Esposas Malvadas in 2017.

Shelley appeared in a couple of spreads for Simplicity Home Catalog Fall/Winter 1971. The spread called "Splice-Ups" featured fashions enhanced with color slicing, using color blocks for different parts of a garment. Shelley Hack Media Consultancy

Shelley in a selfie, 2007

From 1997 to around 2008, Shelley was busy with Shelley Hack Media Consultancy (SHMC), a media consultancy firm she owned that worked in pre- and post-conflict countries. It was a company that internationally specialized on projects that focused on the intersection between media and the development of civil society. She would go into war-torn countries and help them establish democracy through media, which was often done with the help of televised political debates. "I have a consultancy company, and I basically do institution building in post-conflict countries" she told one reporter later. And in 1997, she started by producing the first-ever televised presidential debates to be held in Bosnia.

Shelley worked extensively in the Balkans and Western Asia. SHMC embarked on various projects including: the transition of the Bosnian State television to a public broadcaster; the development of ethnic balance within the Bosnian television sector; the production of television debates and public presentation training for politicians; and the Turkish-Armenian reconciliation through print and television. In 2006, the company became involved in strategic planning for the tender of a Balkan bank with a wide ranging portfolio of assets.

Also in 2006, Shelley Hack became a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy (PCIP). The non-partisan PCIP was and is a membership-based international affairs organization bent on understanding international affairs among others. The mission of PCIP was and is to give a more effective voice to West Coast perspectives on critical global policy issues. Shelley's expertise, experience and influence was one of the core resources of the council, whose membership comprised of leaders and innovators in all fields and from a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and countries (this included prominent leaders in business, academics, politics, government, finance, technology, media, law, entertainment and the arts). Shelley's extensive work since the 1990’s in election organization and registration had qualified her membership into the PCIP.

For ten years, SHMC helped develop unbiased television, film, and associated media projects in war-torn and developing countries. Essentially, she helped develop television and film projects for foreign markets. And for two of those years, Shelley helped the largest media conglomerate in Eastern Europe develop and build the latest film studio complex in the region. "It's a huge, huge thing to do in a post-war country," Shelley told a reporter, "but if you move forward and enable people, people get it."

Knit It Your Way

Shelley in a spread for Seventeen mag, 1972

a closeup of Shelley from the Seventeen mag spread, 1972

Shelley wore a small version of the smock; it was short and snappy, had a curved V-neck and dots and dashes all over. It had two shades of blue and had red as an accent color. She wore it over a red shirt by Dearborn and a red paneled skirt by Pandora. Shelley looked smashing.

another closeup of Shelley from the Seventeen mag spread, 1972

Shelley also wore another small version of the smock; but this time it had a round neck and short-cut sleeves. It was in a gingham-check design, fabulous in lime green and white. She wore it over a white shirt by Dearborn and a lime green skirt by Garland. A cap by Madcaps finished her look. Shelley looked fresh and beautiful.

Shelley and Tanya 2009

Shelley and Tanya Roberts
with TV personality Daniel Gomez Rinaldi in 2009
(Thank you sooo much Daniel Gomez Rinaldi
for posting this fabulous pic)

Shelley attended the Hollywood Collector's Show held in Burbank, California, in July of 2009. Also in the event was Tanya Roberts whom Shelley met for the first time. The two women starred in the legendary 1970s TV series Charlie's Angels, but they never met. Shelley joined the show in the 4th season; then Tanya took over from Shelley in the 5th season when Shelley left the show. It was a historic event in Angel history that many will remember. Let's hope Shelley and Tanya, along with Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd, will reunite again in a sit down interview, an awards show appearance, a magazine cover or even a TV movie. That would make history.

As it was for all the Angels before her, she received a lot of attention from both the media and from fans. Her casting was even mentioned in the evening news - it was a huge deal. "I couldn't believe it. What was I doing in the evening news," she exclaimed at the time.

When she arrived in St. Thomas at the Caribbean, where her first Charlie's Angels episode was going to be shot, she was greeted by the paparazzi.
