And the paparazzi snapped away, of course.

Mood-Setter

Shelley in a spread for Simplicity Fashion News, Nov 1972

Shelley appeared a spread for the November 1972 issue of Simplicity Fashion News. In the spread called "For Young Romantics, The Mood-Setter", she modeled a look that would set the mood - a look made more feminine with pretty details that soften the sleeves, neckline and hem. She modeled Simplicity Pattern 5297, a look made up of a Lord Byron vest, a blouse with bishop sleeves and Puritan collars and a swinging skirt. Matching hose and a flower between her collars finished her look. And Shelley looked very pretty in her mood-setting ensemble.

Critical Acclaim

Shelley, out and about in the 1980s

Shelley was very active in show business in the 1980s. After her big break in Charlie's Angels, she immediately delved into new and unknown territory for her, the stage; and she was one of the first actresses to do so. After all the negative criticism (undeserved) she got from her performance on Angels, she began receiving rave reviews for her stage acting. Her work on Vanities, Close Ties and Born Yesterday surprised and wowed many critics. Her stage work paved the way for her critically acclaimed roles in The King of Comedy and The Stepfather. She was last seen on stage in Tamara in the late 1980s.

Charlie's Angels Season 4 and 5

a German fan asks if Charlie's Angels is coming back

Shelley's tenure in the hit TV series Charlie's Angels lasted for a year and according to her that was already more than enough for her. Shelley's fans all over the world were saddened by the news that she had left the show; and a new Angel search was on the way. Priscilla Presley, Kelly Collins (Bo Derek's sister) and even Farrah Fawcett were mentioned as Shelley's possible replacement. Of course, we know it was Tanya Roberts who got the part. I wonder how it would have been if it was Jaclyn Smith who left and Cheryl Ladd, Shelley and Tanya became the new team. That would have been interesting, right?

Publicity pics would have looked like this.
Charlie's Angels Season 5:

Here's a fan made intro for Charlie's Angels Season 5 with Cheryl, Shelley and Tanya. Although, I think Cheryl would have gotten top billing by that time; because, by then, she would have been the senior Angel. Would it have been great if it happened?

Shelley modeled the Herringbone Print Shirtdress. That year's take on the shirtdress was "a little softer, a little smoother, a lot snappier". It was a dress by Leonard Fashion of Paris that unmistakably oozed class and could be worn anywhere, anytime. A printed scarf, button earrings and a clutch was all that was needed to finish her look. And Shelley looked sensational.

Shelley was THE Charlie Girl from 1976 to 1982. "THE" because it was Shelley's image that inspired women to go out, be independent and be happy about it. In fact, it was and still is Shelley's face that is most associated with the brand. And just like Shelley, Tom Selleck was and is the face most associated with Revlon Charlie's counterpart Chaz. In 1980, the two brands were brought together in an ad campaign that tied both brands with the 1980 Winter Olympics which was held from February 13 through February 24, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York. A Charlie and Chaz Sporting Life Kit, a travel-size kit containing Charlie's after bath tonic, body silk and perfume and Chaz's cologne and after shave balm, was created in honor of the event. Shelley and Tom appeared in ads skiing or ice skating or on a sled as promo for the kit.

Shelley's gown is fabuuulous

Shelley posed for a number of publicity pics for the 1984 TV movie Kicks with daytime soap hunk Anthony Geary, he co-star. The movie takes viewers on an interesting ride up until the very end. This is also the first time Shelley worked with Tom Mason - her co-star in the 1986 TV series Jack and Mike - and the chemistry between the two is very evident. Kicks was released in VHS format and let's hope it is soon released on a clearer DVD format as well.

Her Option Wasn't Picked Up

Shelley at the at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel
in Beverly Hills, California, Feb 1980

In Februay of 1980, it was reported that during the Charlie's Angels Valentine's Day Party at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, cards were handed out to Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd and David Doyle, inviting them to the fifth season of the TV series. And it was also reported that Shelley didn't get one and that quickly spread. But the truth is Shelley wasn't fired. She signed a one-year contract with the show which had a three or five-year option. According to Glamour magazine in May of 1980, "Shelley isn't being fired", the producers of the show said, "Actually, Shelley must decide whether she wants to continue with the show." It was probably why she didn't get one? But then according that same Glamour article, Shelley said, "I'm not sure whether my option is being picked up for the next season." Well, as everyone knows, it wasn't. But then Shelley was okay with that, because, as she told TV Tales: Charlie's Angels in 2002, doing Angels for a year was already more than enough for her.
