HAPPY 40th Anniversary!

HAPPY 40th ANNIVERSARY, CHARLIE'S ANGELS

This month, Charlie's Angels is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its debut as a TV series. It took a lot of convincing from exec prods Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg to get the pilot made and aired on the ABC network; but when it was, it was such an instant hit that it baffled everyone in Hollywood. When the pilot was re-aired and got the same reception, it was given the green light to go on as a series - and what a phenomenal hit series it was.

Valentines Day Party

Shelley at the Charlie's Angels Valentine's Day Party in 1980

Shelley attended the Charlie's Angels Valentine's Day Party at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California in Feb of 1980. According to People magazine, all the show's principals (Jacyln Smith, Cheryl Ladd and David Doyle) "got a telegram inviting them back next year - except Shelley." And she only found out about it the day after. Shelley told E! in 2002 that she never expected to be in the show for more than a year - which was already plenty for her. It seems Shelley was somewhat overwhelmed by the amount of attention her tenure as an Angel generated. As a very private person, her leaving the show must have been a welcome relief.

Painting THE Charlie Girl

Shelley painting her Charlie Girl persona in 1978

Shelley was THE Charlie Girl from the Charlie perfume ads from 1976 to 1982. She was one of the first models to sign an exclusive contract with a giant cosmetics company; consequently, catapulting her to Supermodel status in the modeling biz. Modeling contracts gave models the opportunity to make huge amounts of money (in the millions) for themselves (as well as the companies that get them). Such contracts eventually became the aspiration of every model wanting to make it big in the business. Until this very day, every model's benchmark for success is landing a lucrative modeling contract; and of course, making it on the cover of Vogue.

Meeting with Aaron and Len

Shelley with Leonard Goldberg and Aaron Spelling

Shelley joined the cast of the phenomenal hit Charlie's Angels in 1979. She was chosen by the show's executive producers Leonard Goldberg and Aaron Spelling, because they wanted to bring a different kind of Angel into the fold. They wanted a more glamorous, a more WASPy kid of Angel in the team; and Shelley fit the bill perfectly. Aside from that, she looked great with Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd; plus, she got along fine with them. In fact, Jackie and Cheryl had a say in the choice of the new Angel and they definitely liked Shelley a lot.

Jack And Mike Review

Shelley with Tom Mason in a 1986 writeup about Jack and Mike

Shelley's third foray into series television was Jack and Mike. It was about a busy couple who loved their jobs and each other but couldn't seem to find time to be together. Shelley played journalist Jackie Shea and Tom Mason co-starred as her husband, Mike "Brennan". The premiere episode received mixed reviews. Some loved it, some didn't; nevertheless, it did well enough that it aired for an entire season. A mid-season change in format must have had a hand in its demise - it began to focus less on the character's marriage. "What it's really about is a marriage," Shelley said of the series initially. "Jackie loves her job and her husband, and he loves his job and his wife, and they're trying to make it work."

Also she modeled The Chubby Coat - a fur coat that was perfect for evening affairs. Shelley looked divine on both.
