From Charlie Girl To Charlie's Angel
Shelley in writeup from Seventeen magazine, Nov 1979
Shelley reached Supermodel status in 1976 when she began endorsing Charlie perfume. It was an era when exclusive modeling contracts were unheard of and giant cosmetics companies were beginning to give them out. Shelley signed on to become Revlon's Charlie Girl and the brand became an international sensation, a phenomenon worldwide - catapulting Charlie and Shelley Hack to iconic status. This brought Shelley to the attention of Spelling-Goldberg in 1979. They were looking for a girl to fill in Kate Jackson's empty slot in their hit series Charlie's Angels; and Shelley fit the part to a T. She was THE Charlie Girl, and now she was going to be their newest Charlie's Angel.

Come as a Christmas Angel!
Shelley in a spread for Seventeen magazine, Dec 1964
Shelley's very first Christmas Spread for Seventeen magazine was for the December 1964 issue of the mag. In the spread called "Come as a Christmas Angel", she modeled makeup that young girls were recommended to wear "for all the holiday parties". The new look of that season was to add a sparkle of gold. Soft pink and peaches on the skin, cheeks and lips complemented the golden look. Shiny hair, golden nail polish and golden accessories finished the positively angelic look. And Shelley looked angelic indeed; in fact, 15 years later, she did become an real Angel - a Charlie's Angel. How's that for premonition?

TV Tales Apprearance
screen captures of Shelley from TV Tales: Charlie's Angels
In 2002, Shelley appeared in the E! network series TV Tales which featured the TV show Charlie's Angels. It was one of the few times she agreed to be interviewed about the legendary TV series that made her - as well as Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd and Tanya Roberts - famous throughout the world. Shelley memories, thoughts and insights about the show were very interesting. In fact, from there, it can be seen why she was chosen to take over the "intelligent" Angel role - because that is exactly what she is. Shelley is not only classy, she's a very bright girl.
Sparkling Eyes

Pretty in Pink
Shelley in a spread for Seventeen mag, Dec 1967
Shelley appeared in many teen magazines in the 1960s, particularly Seventeen. She was still a student and her summer job was modeling; it beat waitressing according to her. She appeared in many issues of Seventeen and in December of 1967, she was featured in a spread modeling a pink ensemble, appropriate for young ladies like her at the time. Her pink outfit was finished with a matching hose, shoes, bag, hat and lipstick. And Shelley was definitely pretty in pink.

Ladies of the Night
In 1983, Shelley was included in a writeup called "Ladies of the Night" which featured the leading ladies on primetime TV at the time. Shelley had a new TV series, Cutter to Houston, and was out to prove that she was more than just a pretty face. She got great reviews for her work in the stage play Vanities and the feature film The King of Comedy; and she was ready to show that she had acting chops to accompany her looks. Unfortunately, her series was canceled before it could find audience.
Exciting Accessory Tops

Shelley appeared in Sears Wish Book for the 1973 Christmas Season catalog. On one spread called "today's Most Exciting Accessory Tops", she modeled the perfect finishing touch to anyone's wardrobe - a hand-crocheted poncho. It was deemed "one of the most exciting accessories in today's (1973) fashion scene". It was beautifully designed with diamond pattern crocheting and was imported from the Philippines. And worn over a red sweater and pant ensemble, the poncho was just smashing.

In Shelley's ad, it was used by Koret of California to make up-to-date fashions for the modern working woman. The polyester used was a special blend called Milliken Visa. And Shelley looked fabulous in Koret's working girl ensemble.

her first Charlie's Angels episode "Love Boat Angels"
Shelley joined the cast of Charlie's Angels in 1979; and her first episode was "Love Boat Angels". There was so much publicity about her being chosen to fill in Kate Jackson's empty slot in the TV series, and everyone was excited to see THE Charlie Girl/Supermodel become an Angel. But fans were disappointed when, in her first episode, she wasn't given much to say or do. Although relatively new in acting, Shelley wasn't clueless about what she was doing. She did go to acting school prior to being in the series; plus, she did pass the auditions, so that means she could handle the material. She just needed a chance to show what she could do.

She also was noticed for her work in her TV series Cutter to Houston, which should have had a longer run.

from the Tales from the Crypt 1994 episode "The Assassin"

"No Fourth Wall" Play
a writeup about Shelley from Beverly Hills [213], 1990
From 1989 to 1990, Shelley appeared in Tamara, a play by John Krizanc about the painter Tamara de Lempicka and her historical meeting with Gabriele D'Annunzio at his villa at Gardone Riviera. She played Luisa Baccara, a character "who starts out crazy and gets crazier" according to her. The play was different because it had no "fourth wall", a theater term that means the imaginary "wall" at the front of the stage through which the audience sees the action in the world of the play. So that means audience members could follow any cast member as this play was going on. And Shelley had a lot of fun doing this one.

Let's Dance with Charlie
a closeup of Shelley from the 1979 "Let's dance" Charlie Perfume ad
Shelley was THE Charlie Girl from the late-1970s to the early-1980s; and it was during her tenure that the brand rose to iconic status. Shelley's Charlie Girl persona boosted the sales of Charlie to dizzying heights because everyone wanted to be as vibrant and as confident and as beautiful as she was in the commercials. Her image catapulted Charlie and turned it into one of the best-selling brands in the world EVER; and in turn, the brand catapulted her to Supermodel status in the modeling business. 1979, the year she became a Charlie's Angel, was the year when some of the most glamorous Charlie ads came out. One of them was the "Let's dance" Charlie ad where Shelley was photographed striding her long-legged stride in a fabulous disco outfit, complete with metallic belt and strappy high-heeled sandals, wind-blown curly locks and that effervescent smile. Fab-u-lous!

Shelley starred in Cutter to Houston in 1983 alongside Jim Metzler and Alec Baldwin. The three played doctors assigned to a medical clinic in the town of Cutter, just outside of Houston, Texas. The series had a short run but has been replayed many times, as well as shown in a handful of European countries. Let's hope it makes it to DVD so more can appreciate this very much underrated series that should have had a longer run.
Footed Sleeper
Shelley in a spread for Sears Fall and Winter 1974 catalog

In the spread called "Brushed Knit Poly-print Sleepwear", she modeled a cozy, comfortable and cheery floral printed two-piece footed sleeper that had an elasticized waist as well as ankles and protective vinyl-nubbed soles - perfect for those cold winter nights. And Shelley looked just adorable in it.

Shelley was making a comeback as well. After wowing critics in the stage play Vanities, she went on to do another stage play, Born Yesterday, and wowed them once again. She then starred in Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy with Robert De Niro and Jerry Lewis and received glowing reviews. Then she did the play Close Ties, and the TV movies Trackdown: Finding the Goodbar Killer and Found Money before finally getting the lead in the TV series Cutter to Houston, which could have had a longer run had it been given a chance to warm up to audiences.
