Do Your Own Thing

closeups of Shelley from an ad
for Tampax, 1969

Shelley appeared in an ad for Tampax in 1969. Tampax is a brand of tampon designed by Earle Haas (who filed a patent in the 1930s). Tampons are designed to absorb and lock-in a woman's period flow to help avoid leaks and free the user to pursue whatever activity, whenever. The ad showed Shelley enjoying various activities, even during off months... like skiing in July, swimming in January, running in the rain or dancing in the street. Why? Because, like the activities mentioned, it will never be the wrong time of the month with Tampax. "Do Your Own Thing" is the ad's tagline and Tampax meant freedom and comfort anytime, anywhere. And Shelley was certainly doing her own thing and free to do so.
