In 1987, Shelley starred in the psychological thriller The Stepfather alongside Terry O'Quinn (who played her husband) and Jill Schoelen (who played her daughter). Directed by Joseph Ruben, the film has gained a cult following since its release. In a 1987 The Stepfather UK promotional video, Shelley was asked about her co-stars. "He's a wonderful guy," Shelley said about Terry O'Quinn. "He's a very nice man. He has two lovely children and a lovely wife. And I think he's a really good actor," she added. "Jill Schoelen is a very nice girl," she said of her onscreen daughter. As for her filming experience, Shelley said, "It was fun. It was a very nice experience." She added, "It was very nice maybe because I like the people a lot."

Jill Schoelen greeted her onscreen mom Shelley a happy birthday online, both on X and on Instagram last July 7. Jill thought when she found out Shelley was cast in the film, "Wow, this gorgeous model, wonderful actress is going to be my mom." Jill greeted Shelley and hoped that next year, for the 40th anniversary of The Stepfather, they have a reunion.
