Seventeen Model

Shelley in a spread for Seventeen magazine, November 1965

Shelley was discovered by A&P supermarket heir and publisher Huntington Hartford at a debutante ball when she was just 14 years old. It was her first time to be invited to one and her mother instructed Shelley, "If  any older men bother you, go powder your nose." And she kept powdering her nose all night because "A guy kept bothering me," Shelley said, "He kept coming up to ask, 'Have you ever thought of being a model?' " After careful consideration, and with the help of her mother, a former Conover model, she finally decided it was a better summer job than waitressing. They went to went to New York to see Eileen Ford (a friend of her mother's) for representation. In 1964, Shelley appeared in a spread on Hartford's Show magazine, the September 1964 issue. In November of that same year, her face was on the covers of both Seventeen and Glamour magazines. And the rest is Supermodel history.

Italian Mag Spread E

Shelley appeared on the pages for Vogue Italia in April of 1976. In the spread called "Vestito: Un Po Di Collegio Gli Fa Bene" or "Dress: A Little Colligiate for Spring", she modeled traditional  silk dresses and the latest way they were to be worn for that spring - the way college students did then.

She wore a silk dress accessorized (like college students would then) with a simple purse or some matching lipstick or a fancy piece of jewelry or a chic hat or a great pair of nylons. With any of them, Shelley looked sensational.

Shelley became hot property in 1979 and 1980. She landed the coveted part of Tiffany Welles in the mega hit TV series Charlie's Angels and was hounded by the paparazzi. She was told one interviewer later that she was unprepared by the 'press bonanza" that followed her casting. On TV Tales: Charlie's Angels in 2002, she said that press people were crawling into her windows. She was surprised by the amount of interest there was in her casting; but she was determined to do her best and to keep her privacy intact throughout the entire thing.

Shelley's casting on Charlie's Angels was big news in 1979; it generated both good and bad news. Many were excited to see THE Charlie Girl running around, catching the bad guys for the Townsend Agency. Others were saying that she wasn't getting along with her new co-stars, incumbent Angels Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd. To set the record straight, Jaclyn and Cheryl asked the ABC network and Spelling-Goldberg Productions to throw a party for the TV Critics of America "to introduce them to Shelley and to put an end to the rumors.
