The Place For Pants 1

a closeup of Shelley
from a spread on Montgomery Ward
Fall and Winter 1971 catalog

Shelley appeared on the pages of many catalogs for Montgomery Ward. In 1971, she appeared on the Montgomery Ward Fall and Winter 1971 catalog in a spread called "The Place For Pants And Jeans - All Wide Leg And So Plush." The spread featured plush tops and jeans. She wore the Space Dye Top (a pullover turtleneck top with long sleeves and a zipper from neck to chest) over a pair of Suede Look-Alike Jeans (which had a wide two-button waistband, zip-fly front and mock pocket flaps). Matching heeled footwear and a necklace and ring set finished her look. And Shelley looked plush and fabulous.

Sweet And Stunning

a closeup of Shelley from an ad for Ship'n Shore, 1974

Shelley appeared in many ads for Ship'n Shore during her modeling days. Ship'n Shore was a popular women's clothing brand that constantly updated its line. In 1974, Shelley appeared in an ad that featured Peasant Tops that were feelin' folksy and swinging easy... as well as Cowpoke Shirts that were lookin' nice. In the ad, she modeled the "Earthen Embroidered Peasantry" top. It was a scoop-necked, short sleeved peasant blouse with dainty floral embroidery. It had a gathered neckline and had an elasticized waist that ended in a short peplum. The puffed sleeves were elasticized at the upper arm. She paired the blouse with a matching maxi skirt. A matching wrap bracelet finished her look. And Shelley looked both sweet and stunning in Ship'n Shore's latest clothing line for 1974.

Maggie Pierson

Shelley was very active in Hollywood in the 1980s. In 1985, she starred in the TV movie Kicks with soap superstar Anthony Geary. The movie tackled a somewhat unusual subject. It was about a couple who was addicted to, who got a big kick out of cheap thrills; and as the story unfolded, the thrills began to take a dark and dangerous turn. Some critics panned it. Some loved it. Some found it so-so. It was a bit ahead of its time.

a writeup about Shelley's 1985 TV movie Kicks

The movie was about a San Francisco college teacher, Maggie Pierson (Shelley), who had a penchant for living on the edge and engaging in dangerous, life-threatening activities. She meets her match in mysterious millionaire Martin Cheevers (Geary) who takes her on a ride of her life - from one dangerous thrill to another. Eventually, the thrill becomes too dangerous and Maggie finds herself in peril. Tom Mason played Caleb, Maggie's boyfriend. Mason's chemistry with Shelley was so evident that it wasn't surprising he was cast alongside Shelley in the TV series Jack and Mike a year later.

It Isn't Now

Shelley appeared in the March 1973 issue of Woman's Day magazine. In the spread "Found Money: Whatever It Was, It Isn't Now", she modeled a corduroy toggle coat that went through a creative transformation. It was shortened, had its buttons changed out and was "looped with masses of fringe around the collar and down the front". Worn with a matching sweater and pants, the coat was quite interesting. Shelley's pic was taken by her then boyfriend photographer Steen Svensson. For more check out: A Creative Transformation

Depends On Her Attitude

Single Bars, Single Women

Shelley starred in the 1984 TV movie Single Bars, Single Women which, as one writer put it, was "darn good." The film explored the singles scene for women - post women's liberation. Women had finally come out on their own, so the rules of dating were changing... fast. No longer in need of escorts and chaperones, women could now go bar-hopping alone to meet the men they wanted to meet. Women finally had a voice and a choice. "I like being a single woman in the world today," Shelley said.

Shelley would always do research for any role she was about to play. And in 1984, when she got the part of truck-stop waitress Frankie in the TV movie Single Bars, Single Women, she went into singles bars disguised in a black wig and heavy makeup. She wanted to see what was going on with the kind of women who went there (because Frankie was a singles bar patron). "The amount of attention a woman draws depends on her attitude. It depends on how much you put out," Shelley observed. She also tried her hand at being a truck-stop waitress like Frankie. "I even researched being a waitress by working in a truck stop in Provo (Utah) where we filmed most of the movie. I learned a great deal in the café, too. I made a lot of money in tips and learned some tricks about turning down customers without hurting their feelings," she said.

Charlie's Surprise Bag 1

for Charlie perfume, 1978

Shelley was THE quintessential Charlie Girl and appeared in many, many ads for the brand. In 1978, she appeared in a newspaper ad for Charlie called "Charlie's Surprise Bag." It was a promo that offered a tote bag that folded up small to pack flat in any suitcase... then opened up big to hold anything from beach gear to vacation souvenirs. It was a dividend for just $6.75 with any $5.00 or more purchase from the Charlie Collection by Revlon. And with the tote came 2 bars of Charlie Fragrant Body Silk Soap, a container of Charlie Body Silk Perfumed Powder and a bottle of concentrated Charlie Perfume Spray. Now wasn't that a great surprise? And of course, Shelley appeared in the ad, Charlie gorgeous as ever.

Angels Episode

Shelley on the set of the Charlie's Angels
episode "Angel Hunt," 1979

Shelley became Charlie's Angel Tiffany Welles in 1979. After a long search, executive producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg chose Shelley to fill the spot vacated by Kate Jackson in the spring of 1979. Shelley said, "I remember there was a big Angel hunt going on, and they asked me to audition. The hunt seemed to go on for a long time. A lot of my girlfriends went in to be tested, but I wasn't involved until sometime later when my agent called and said, 'It's a terrific show - you really should think about testing.' So, I thought about it again and went in."

The second episode she filmed for the series was "Angel Hunt". Filmed in August of 1979, parts of it were shot on location at Zuma Beach in California (where the paparazzi and fans had a field day taking snaps of the Angels as they were filming). As mentioned in Mike Pingel's book Channel Surfing: Charlie's Angels, in the scene where she was up a tree, Shelley remembers being left up that tree when the whole crew broke for lunch (How could they do that?). And in the scene where she fell into the water, she swallowed some of it, so she was given a hepatitis shot.
