Second Series

screen captures of Shelley
from the pilot episode of Cutter to Houston, 1983

Shelley's second TV series was Cutter to Houston in 1983. She had triumphed on stage with plays like Vanities and Close Ties; as well as in film with Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy (which she starred in with Robert De Niro). She had finished work with George Segal in Trackdown: Finding the Goodbar Killer; as well as Dick Van Dyke and Sid Caesar in Found Money. She had enough experience to tackle her role as sawbones Dr. Beth Gilbert in her new TV series. But even though her acting had significantly improved, the series went through a bumpy ride and was cancelled before it could find an audience (sleeper hits were unheard of at the time).

Promo Still from '78

Shelley was one of the up-and-coming actresses in 1978. She had gained fame as a Supermodel via her Charlie perfume endorsements and was poised to become the next big thing in Hollywood. After a starring role in the movie If Ever I See You Again, a guest role in the TV series Married: The First Year and wrapping up the TV movie Death Car on the Freeway, she auditioned for the role of Tiffany Welles in the hit TV series Charlie's Angels and got the part. Shelley became an overnight superstar even before filming anything for Charlie's Angels.

A Burnoose and a Bonus

A Burnoose

Shelley in an ad that appeared on Harper's Bazaar in 1975

Shelley appeared in an ad for Maharani in 1975. She modeled a posh version of the Burnoose (a hooded cloak in either a coarse woolen or embroidered and even tasseled fabric) that had been restyled into a jacket. It was made with "silken threads in opulent shades of red, purple, emerald and gold - and woven in traditionally brilliant Indian patterns". And of course, it came with a hood (which had a gold silken tassel hanging from its crown). It was great to wear over dresses, pants, skirts and even evening gowns for those cold, windy nights out in the town. And Shelley definitely made it look like fashionable must-have for the season.

Shelley's fellow Charlie's Angel Tanya Roberts also dabbled in modeling early on. She appeared in several ads and spreads in various fashion magazines. In 1975, she appeared in an ad for Ulla, a mail order catalog. She modeled the Lumberjacket, a restyled black and white check lumberjack shirt which was slimmer and longer, had a curved shirt-tail hem and was satin-lined on the cuffs, neck and shoulders. Tanya looked fab in it.

Paparazzi Frenzy

Shelley caught by the paparazzi in 1979

When Shelley was cast as Tiffany Welles on Charlie's Angels in 1979, the paparazzi went into a frenzy. She was photographed everywhere she went and was sought after by everyone - and she hadn't even filmed anything for the series yet. The interest in Kate Jackson's replacement on the hit TV show was at an all-time high. Charlie's Angels was one of the most-loved, most-talked-about TV shows in the past few years and everyone knew that Shelley, THE Charlie Girl, was a perfect fit. Aaron Spelling made a great choice and everyone was excited to see her on the show.

Greek Crossword Cover

Shelley, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd appeared on the cover of Savvato in 1990. The Greek magazine featured crossword puzzles (in Greek of course) and a pic of the three girls (from the time they were on Charlie's Angels) was on  the cover. The TV series was such a huge hit all over the world that until today, all the women who were on it are still being talked about. Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett (R.I.P. - we love you), Jaclyn, Cheryl, Shelley and Tanya Roberts will always be in the hearts of every Charlie's Angels fan in the world.

In the spread called "The Way is Long", Shelley modeled a long dress - a fun, feminine dress with a swishy, ankle-length skirt. She wore pattern number 9265, a dress in a dark printed voile fabric that had lace highlights, "leg-o'-mutton sleeves", a high neckline and a long skirt. And Shelley made her sweet, romantic dress a great option for the young misses of 1971.

Shelley also appeared on the centerfold of Simplicity School Fashion News for March of 1971. The centerfold spread was called "The Way is a Combo" and it featured fashion separates that "come and go merrily with a spunky spirit". Shelley modeled pattern number 9288, the "greatest put-on of the season". Done in terrycloth, it had "the split personality" of a long drawstring skirt and a pair of rompers. A pair of flat white leather sandals, a white leather-strapped watch and sunny yellow sunglasses finished her look. The Princess Leia hairdo optional.

Denim Separates And Tops

Shelley in Sears Spring Summer catalog, 1975

Shelley appeared on the pages of Sears Spring Summer catalog for 1975. She appeared in a spread called "Denim Separates Team with The Right Tops". She modeled junior "denim and top" fashions for the young sporty miss. One of the outfits she modeled was a camisole-style top with lace waist straps, edging and an all-around waist insert which was teamed up with a flounced denim skirt that had lace edging at the bottom of the flounce. A pair of straw wedgies and a matching bangle finished her look. Another outfit she modeled was a pullover style T-shirt with lavish embroidery and lace trim on the chest which was teamed up with a pair of shorts that had two patch pockets trimmed with embroidery and lace as well. A pair of straw wedgies and a navy colored belt finished her look. In both looks, Shelley was so casually chic.
