Rave Waves '87

pics of Shelley from the cover and pages
of Star Hairdo's magazine, 1987

Shelley appeared on the cover of the June/July issue of Star Hairdo's in 1987. In the issue, Shelley, one of TV's most glamorous women, shared her beauty and styling secrets to readers everywhere. Shelley had just had just concluded her run as Jackie Shea in TV series Jack and Mike and her current glam new hairstyle was featured in a spread called "Shelley Hack's Rave Waves." The gorgeous one-time Charlie's Angel was wearing her shoulder-skimming asymmetric bob in a casual tumble of waves. For the office, her hair was parted and waves pared down for a more professional look. For dressier occasions, her hair was given extra volume, with her waves intensified and allowed to frame her face like a halo - 1980s style of course. Shelley was drop-dead gorgeous.

With it, she wore a tiered maxi skirt in two different floral patterns and trimmed with velvet ribbon as well. Shelley was one fabulous floral-fest, and, as always,  looked sensational.

Frankie in 1984

a closeup of Shelley from a promo pic
for Single Bars, Single Women, 1984

Shelley starred in the TV movie Single Bars, Single Women in 1984. Shelley played Frankie, a waitress at a truck stop café who is trying to get over her former flame Gabe (played by Starsky and Hutch alum Paul Michael Glaser) by going out to bars and meeting new men. The movie explored the challenges single women faced at the time, because (post women's lib) the dating rules were changing and gender roles were beginning to blur. When she got the part, Shelley went into single bars in disguise to see what was going on with the kind of women who went there. She also tried her hand at being a real truck stop waitress. Shelley turned out a fine performance. Shelley's future husband, Harry Winer, directed the film.

She was known as THE Charlie Girl and was the image model and spokesperson for the no. 1 Revlon brand. "I begged Aaron to hire Shelley. There was something about her I really liked; I was impressed with her Charlie perfume commercials and how she could create a look just by turning her collar up and putting her hands in her pockets," said Nolan Miller, the wardrobe designer on the series.

Jackie O'Shea

a closeup of Shelley from a promo pic
for Jack and Mike, 1986

Shelley Hack starred in her third TV series Jack and Mike in 1986. The series was initially called Jackie O'Shea; and Shelley was going to play the title role. It was to be about a high-profile journalist's life, a working woman who had a supportive husband waiting at home - a kind of role reversal situation. But the story was further developed and the husband was given a bigger role. It was retitled Our Kind of Town and Tom Mason, Shelley's co-star in the TV movie Kicks, came aboard to play Jackie's husband Mike Brennan. Shelley and Tom had great chemistry and the series was going to take advantage of that. When it aired, it was retitled Jack and Mike and both characters got equal billing.

The pleated mini-skirt had an elastic waistband and a side opening. Matching heeled strappy footwear with ankle straps finished her look. A gold butterfly pendant necklace and a gold hairpin accessorized her look. Her short skirt definitely bared one of her best assets, her legs. The Actress

a closeup of Shelley from a promo pic
for Jack and Mike, 1986

After leaving Charlie's Angels, Shelley was able to prove that she was a capable actress. Shelley tackled stage via plays like Vanities (1981) and Born Yesterday (1982) and was critically praised. She shined in her big screen roles in Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy (1983) and cult classics like Troll (1986) and The Stepfather (1987). In the small screen, she starred with Dick Van Dyke and Sid Caesar in Found Money (1983) and George Segal in Trackdown: Finding the Goodbar Killer (1983). In her two other series, although short-lived (Cutter to Houston and Jack and Mike), she showed people she could act. Also, her Jack and Mike TV series may have paved the way for other yuppie series like Thirtysomething.
