Shelley attended a White House dinner in honor of the soon-to-be-married Prince of Wales, Prince Charles of Great Britain, in May of 1981. With a guest list of only 30, the dinner did away with strict protocol and had the prince arrive before the guests - which included Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Alfred and Betsy Bloomingdale, Diana Vreeland and William F. Buckley among others. Shelley was escorted by her Charlie perfume commercial co-star Bobby Short, who provided the entertainment for the evening in the yellow Oval Room. Bobby Short, who (by then) was already a renowned American cabaret singer and pianist, told Vogue magazine about his encounter with Prince Charles at that White House dinner in May of that year. In the writeup called "Playing The White House: The Special Memoirs Of A Show-Stopper," Bobby Short recounted:

Shelley and I joined the short line of guests, each of us punctual as pie, all of us eager to meet the royal visitor. Mrs. Reagan extended her hand, then introduced us to the Prince with a simple and unaffected, "Have you met His Royal Highness?" We had not. We shook the Prince's hand. He responded warmly and in a totally unassuming manner made a modicum of small talk. He was exceedingly charming, open, and terribly relaxed, saying all the right things to the right people.

Shelley appeared on many magazines (covers and spreads) during her Supermodel days. She appeared on many major mags such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, Mademoiselle, Seventeen and the like. She also appeared on bridal magazines such as Modern Bride. Modern Bride was and is a guide for brides that contains fashion options and information about everything that has to do with weddings, honeymoon destinations and marriage advice.

In 1975, Shelley appeared on a spread with fellow model Nancy Dutiel (who became the face and spokesmodel for the French cosmetics company Lancôme from April 1977 until the early 1980s). They both modeled various bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses that were chic and up-to-the-minute. Shelley wore a pink bridesmaids' dress in crepe de chine by Christos for Galina. It had a high neckline with buttons and details going down the front of the bodice, bishop sleeves with cuff details, and a full skirt with a sash. She topped it off with a pink headpiece and veil by Christos for Galina as well. In the same spread, Shelley also wore a white bridal dress with a gathered chemise and a dropped shoulder yoke by Frank Masandrea for Bridal Couture. It had a high neckline with piping details, long bishop sleeves with piping-detailed cuffs, and a self-tie belt. She topped it off with a floral headpiece and veil by Jean Vincent Pulver for Bridal Couture. Matching strappy formal footwear and a silver necklace with a cross pendant finished her look. Let's take another break from the Jack and Mike episode "Personal Foul," another commercial break that is... and check out the rarely seen original opening credits of the fourth season of Charlie's Angels in 1979. Shelley became Charlie's Angel No. 5 in 1979 and everyone wanted to know everything about Charlie's newest cherub. Write-ups about her immediately came out as soon as it was announced that Revlon Charlie's Superstar model got the part of Tiffany Welles in the hit series. "The Charlie Girl becomes Charlie's newest Angel" was the headline Aaron Spelling was counting on to help bring interest to the show - which, by then, was entering its fourth season. In the past season, the show had dropped from #4 to #12 in the Nielsen ratings; and the casting shake-up was just what the series needed to bring viewers back. When Shelley's debut episode "Love Boat Angels" finally aired, it topped the Nielsen ratings.

The opening credits for fourth season of Charlie's Angels was updated to include newest Angel Tiffany Welles, Shelley's character. Like all the Angels before her, Tiffany graduated from the police academy; but she did so in Boston (originally though, it was reported that Tiff was going to hail from Connecticut). It seems her police academy shots were a combination of Sabrina's (Kate Jackson) and Jill's (Farrah Fawcett)... as it showed her shooting a target and then typing at an office. The newest Angel team did the traditional "Angel Walk" but this time they didn't exit the police academy. And in Shelley's original opening credits montage, footage of her from the episode "Angel Hunt," then from "Love Boat Angels," then another from "Love Boat Angels," then from "Angels Go Truckin'," then finally from "Angels at the Altar" were included. Later, the final one was changed to footage of Shelley from "Angels on Campus." The one with the "Angels on Campus" footage has been the one in use until today.

Shelley was one of the highest-paid models in the 1970s. She started out as a part-time teen model in the 1960s, then went full-time in the 1970s after graduating from college in 1970. Images of Shelley appeared everywhere - from magazine covers to fashion spreads to television and print ads. She was one of the biggest earners at the Ford modeling agency. By 1976, she jumped to Supermodel status when she landed an exclusive contract with Revlon to endorse their Charlie perfume and cosmetics line. She appeared on the cover and pages of numerous major publications, including Harper's Bazaar.

In December of 1977, Shelley appeared on the pages of Harper's Bazaar... in the spread called "Luxurious Christmas At-Home Looks." In it, she modeled outfits perfect for those intimate Christmas celebrations at home with the family and with friends. She wore outfits with easy, elegant shapes in soft and fabulous fabrics. She modeled The Black Velvet Smoking Suit by Fernando Sanchez (check out: Christmas At-Home Looks A) She also modeled The Cachet of Cashmere and Crepe robe and pants set by Matej for Odette Barsa... which was just perfect to slip into on Christmas morning or on any morning for that matter. The soft-as-silk, warm-as-fur, pure cashmere robe was simply cut. It was in an appealing taupe color with pink piping and a pink self-tie cord belt. "To Be Or Not To Be"

Shelley was among the celebrities who participated in the hour-long celebrity special released in 1993, Celebrity Guide to Entertaining. Spago restaurant maître d' Bernard Erpicum hosted the special along with Paula McClure. Many celebrities/stars of the era participated in the educational video. Celebrity Guide to Entertaining introduced viewers to various styles of entertaining, proper behavior and decorum during meals, as well as featured some culinary delights. Joining Shelley were Ed Begley Jr., Tony Curtis, Sarah Douglas, Terri Garr, Whoopi Goldberg, Merv Griffin, Kelly Le Brock, Michael Lerner, Dorothy Lyman, Dudley Moore, Joe Regalbuto, Steven Seagal, Rod Steiger, Jon Voight, Peter Weller and Jackie Collins. It was released in VHS format.

Shelley appeared on many Simplicity pattern catalogs, brochures and packaging during the 1960s and 1970s. The Simplicity Pattern Company is the leading manufacturer of sewing patterns and sewing pattern guides which are distributed throughout the world. They have been manufacturing sewing patterns since 1927 and have allowed fashionistas on a budget and sewing aficionados to create clothes in a reliable manner. In 1975, Shelley appeared on the package cover for Simplicity pattern 7255.

Simplicity pattern 7255 was for a day-to-evening knit dress that came in two lengths. The top-stitched dress had a low round neck, set-in sleeves and an optional self-fabric tie belt. It could be made as a long dress with long sleeves or a regular length dress with short sleeves, or even vice versa as preferred. Shelley wore the regular length version with short sleeves. It was made from a stretchable jersey knit black fabric with sophisticated silver and gold printing. Gold button earrings, open-toe high heels and a medium-sized clutch bag finished her look. Shelley was one of the best-dressed women of that evening. She wore a black evening gown that was appropriate, chic, glamorous and very much in vogue. Ruffles were all the rage in the early 1980s and Shelley's black evening gown (which appears to be satin with a chiffon overlay) reflected the trend of the era. It had a Venus cut halter top that was edged with soft diaphanous ruffles down the front and around the arms. Tiered satin ruffles (which appear to be overlaid with diaphanous chiffon) adorned the flamenco-style skirt of her gown as well. A black satin belt accentuated her tiny waist. A black evening clutch and a pair of up-to-the-minute black strappy high-heeled evening footwear finished her look. A three-strand pearl bracelet with a fancy clasp and a pair of trendy, oversized, chunky button earrings accessorized her look. With glam evening makeup and hair blown straight, Shelley was a glamazon and a sight to behold.

Promo pics of Charlie's latest detective triumvirate were immediately produced and distributed all over the globe... and the pics didn't disappoint. The latest Angel team wasn't just glamorous, the girls looked so good together - reminiscent of the series' first season team. Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd and Shelley Hack were a feast to the eyes, individually and as a team - and they posed for promotional pics in casual outfits, fur coats and high heels, evening gowns by Nolan Miller, satin robes, and sexy, tight-fitting spandex disco pants. TV spots and promos were also produced and aired... announcing the addition of Shelley as Tiffany. The 1979 ABC Fall Preview TV Promo declared that "Charlie found a brand new Angel in the beautiful Miss Tiffany Welles." When Shelley's debut episode "Love Boat Angels" finally aired, it topped the Nielsen ratings.

Shelley was among the celebrities who participated in two hour-long celebrity specials released in 1990s, Celebrity Guide to Wine (1990) and Celebrity Guide to Entertaining (1993). Spago restaurant maître d' Bernard Erpicum hosted both specials and many celebrities/stars of the era participated in both educational videos. Celebrity Guide to Wine was a fun and practical guide to everything about wine. It answered questions many people had regarding the drinking and serving of wine, as well as debunked some of the myths and the rules on the subject. Aside from Shelley, Dudley Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Herbie Hancock, Kelly Le Brock, Robert Loggia and Steven Seagal joined in on the fun. It was released in both VHS and LaserDisc formats. Celebrity Guide to Entertaining introduced viewers to various styles of entertaining, proper behavior and decorum during meals, as well as featured some culinary delights. Paula McClure co-hosted. Shelley appeared in many beauty campaigns for many cosmetics companies during her tenure as Supermodel. In December of 1975, she appeared with fellow Supermodel Beverly Johnson in Avon's cosmetics and beauty catalog. In the spread called "Holiday Special Effects," they wore cosmetics that could be used to create "Sparkling Eyes" and "A Glowing Face" - perfect for that 1975 holiday season. To brighten eyes, there was the Eyeshadow Crayon, there was Hide 'n Lite to hide dark circles under the eyes, Eyemaker Wardrobe powder shadows, the Powder Shadow Duet set, and the Lash Supreme Mascara for longer thicker lashes. For a radiant face, there was the Avon About Town Compact kit, the Powder Blush Compact for brush-on color, the Tone 'N' Tint cream foundation, the Avon Shades of Beauty Liquid Foundation, the Avon Shades of Beauty Creamy Blush, the Even Tone liquid foundation, the Blushlucent Liquid Rouge, the Natural Radiance blush, and the Powder-Pak refill.

In the same year, Shelley and Beverly appeared on the cover of the Avon Makeup Color Chart catalog's Fall/Holidays 1975 issue. The Avon Makeup Color Chart catalog not only contained Avon's various cosmetic lines and brands, it also contained tips and tricks on how to create stunning looks with their cosmetics. It also contained color guides that flattered the various skin tones. And it also contained a variety of color combination guides that could help any woman create a cohesive and complementary makeup look. Shelley and Beverly were just downright gorgeous on the cover.

Fall And Winter 1975 catalog

Shelley appeared on many spreads for many catalogs from the late '60s to the mid-'70s. Mail-order catalogs were at the height of its popularity at the time. They were big-book size publications that contained a list of general merchandise from, usually, a department store that were available for purchase and delivery straight to the homes of consumers. Everything from homeware to toys were featured in these catalogs... as well as garments and the latest fashion pieces. Many Supermodels - like Cheryl Tiegs, Beverly Johnson, Patti Hansen and Shelley Smith, just to name a few - appeared in the most popular catalogs of the era. Many models who eventually became actresses also appeared in these catalogs - like Veronica Hamel, Erin Grey, Kim Basinger and Pam Dawber.

Fall And Winter 1975 catalog

Shelley appeared on many spreads throughout the JCPenney Fall and Winter 1975 catalog. In the section called "Look Great Without Spending A Fortune," she modeled fashion pieces that could be incorporated into any woman's present wardrobe to give it a fresh, new, high-end and updated look. And, of course, the pieces were so budget-friendly, women wouldn't think twice about buying an armful of them. Over a pair of rust-colored straight-leg pants, Shelley wore the Sueded Pigskin Jacket which was fully lined in nylon taffeta. It was a stylish button-front jacket in sports acrylic knit with cable-knit sleeves and inserts down the front. It had a full pigskin back and belt. It had a ribbed shawl collar, a welt-seamed front yoke, top-stitched trimming, and flap-style patch pockets. Around her neck, she wore the rust-colored Smooth Crepe Scarf in woven polyester with a satin border. With her hair up, Shelley looked chic, high-end and so gorgeous on the spread.

From Perfume Model to Policewoman

Charlie's newest Angel in 1979 was THE Charlie Girl Shelley Hack. She became Angel no. 5 in 1979 when she joined the cast of the phenomenal hit series. Her character was Tiffany Welles, a classy Boston-bred policewoman who was the daughter of one of Charlie's oldest friends. She was chosen from among a bevy of beautiful actresses which included Priscilla Presley, Kim Basinger, Michelle Pfeiffer, Connie Sellecca and Shari Belafonte. In May of 1979, Bond Girl Barbara Bach was announced as the newest Angel. But it was quickly retracted and, by late-May of that year, Shelley was announced as Charlie's newest Angel. The newest heavenly recruit came with the approval of not just executive producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg but also of incumbent Angels Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd.

The news of Shelley's casting quickly spread around the world and writeups about her were translated in many languages. She became Hollywood's newest Superstar even before she filmed one frame for the hit TV series; and she was written about in Latin America, Europe, Asia and all over. Images of her appeared everywhere and everyone was excited to see THE Charlie Girl as Charlie's newest Angel. And the paparazzi relentlessly pursued her after the announcement of her Angel-dom. "I was totally unprepared for the press 'bonanza' which followed," she said on Jane Pauley's show Time and Again in 2000. "I was surprised by the amount of attention," she said. "I had press people crawling in my window," she told E! in 2002.

Personal Foul 11

Shelley's third foray into series TV was Jack and Mike. It was about a married yuppie couple living in Chicago, trying to find time for each other in their busy schedules. Shelley played Jackie Shea, a star columnist at The Mirror, a widely-circulated Chicago paper. Her column was awaited by everyone every week. Her husband was Mike Brennan (played by Tom Mason), a successful restaurateur. Other cast members were: Nora Adler (Jacqueline Brookes), Jackie’s editor;  Anthony Kubecek (Kevin Dunn), Jackie's assistant; Carol (Holly Fulger), the head waitress at Mike's restaurant, Brennan's Grill; and Rick Scotti (Vincent Baggetta), an attorney who appears occasionally. In the episode "Personal Foul," a college professor is suspended for trying to flunk the school's star basketball player, and Mike is upset that Jackie's covering the story, since it's his alma mater and he's the team's No. 1 supporter. The episode was originally aired in September 30, 1986.

To continue, amidst the problems Mike has been facing (and trying to solve) due to the hot water problem at Brennan's Grill, he receives a phone call from Coach Cyril Brock. Cy is upset that the article Jackie wrote about the college sports scene at Lincoln University may ruin his chances at securing the job offered to him by a university in California. Mike tells Cy that Jackie was writing about lingerie not the college sports scene. But Cy tells him that the article just came out in the evening edition and is going to be a series. Cy tells Mike to tell Jackie to stop and hangs up. Back at home, Jackie arrives excited as she spots Mike reading the paper at the dinner table. She approaches him and announces that she has a surprise for him... under her coat. She opens it and underneath is the lingerie picked out for her by her editor Nora at the lingerie party earlier that evening. Mike is not impressed. He's upset about the article Jackie had written about the college sports scene at Lincoln U. Jackie tries to explain to him that she went to see him at the restaurant earlier to warn him about exactly that; but she had to rush back to The Mirror before she was able to. Mike is too upset to discuss it with her and goes to bed.

Shelley first became famous in the 1970s as THE Charlie Girl. In 1976, she was hand-picked to represent the Revlon Charlie brand, as she was the embodiment the brand's ideal – gorgeous, sexy and young. Makeup artist Rick Gillette recalls, "Shelley Hack was really the perfect girl for Charlie. I remember when Revlon creative director David Leddick had Steen Svensson shoot the first presentation with her that got her the contract." They shot a commercial with her and when it debuted, it was an immediate and immense hit. By 1977, Charlie became the #1 fragrance in the world (the first American-made international bestseller). In 1977, she appeared in a newspaper ad for Charlie called the "Make It A Christmas To Remember With Charlie From Revlon." It was a promo for the "Charlie Fragrance Coup" which contained a bottle of Charlie perfume spray, Charlie Body Silk, Charlie Body Silk Foam Bath, Charlie Body Silk and Charlie Bath Soap. It was worth just $4.75 with any Charlie collection purchase. Now wasn't that a fabulous Christmas gift to receive? Shelley, as always, was gorgeous in the ad.

for Single Bars, Single Women, 1984

Shelley (who played Tiffany Welles on Charlie's Angels) and Paul Michael Glaser (who played Detective Dave Starsky on Starsky & Hutch) starred alongside each other in the 1984 telefilm Single Bars, Single Women. Shelley starred as Frankie, a truck-stop waitress looking to move on from her former flame Gabe (Paul Michael Glaser). The film explored the bar scene as seen in the eyes of women. It was a time when gender roles were evolving and the rules of dating were changing... fast. No longer in need of escorts and chaperones, women could now go bar-hopping alone to meet the men they wanted to meet. Women were becoming more confident in going out on their own and looking for love and companionship. Tony Danza, Keith Gordon, Christine Lahti, Mare Winningham and Kathleen Wilhoite completed the cast. It was directed by Shelley's future hubby Harry Winer.

Shelley appeared on many Simplicity pattern catalogs, brochures and packaging during the 1960s and 1970s. The Simplicity Pattern Company is the leading manufacturer of sewing patterns and sewing pattern guides which are distributed throughout the world. They have been manufacturing sewing patterns since 1927 and have allowed fashionistas on a budget and sewing aficionados to create clothes in a reliable manner. Shelley appeared in Simplicity Young Ideas Catalog's Fall-Winter 1972 issue.

In the issue, Shelley appeared in the spread called "Moonlighting Magic Makes The Scene In Romantic New Lengths" - which featured patterns for mix-and-match wardrobe sets. Shelley wore Simplicity pattern number 5245, a pattern for a dolman-sleeved blouse with a back zipper, tie collar and long sleeves that gathered into sleeve bands. The pattern also included a jumper with a square neckline, a midriff stitched to the bodice and a long A-line skirt with a back zipper. It had self fabric ruffles and tie ends. Matching hose and footwear and a pin on her hair finished her look. And Shelley looked young, chic, and very romantic.

Fall And Winter 1975 catalog

Shelley appeared on many spreads for many catalogs from the late '60s to the mid-'70s. Mail-order catalogs were at the height of its popularity at the time. They were big-book size publications that contained a list of general merchandise from, usually, a department store that were available for purchase and delivery straight to the homes of consumers. Everything from homeware to toys were featured in these catalogs... as well as garments and the latest fashion pieces. Many Supermodels - like Cheryl Tiegs, Beverly Johnson, Patti Hansen and Shelley Smith, just to name a few - appeared in the most popular catalogs of the era. Many models who eventually became actresses also appeared in these catalogs - like Veronica Hamel, Erin Grey, Kim Basinger and Pam Dawber.

Shelley appeared on many spreads throughout the JCPenney Fall and Winter 1975 catalog. In the section called "Look Great Without Spending A Fortune," she modeled fashion pieces that could be incorporated into any woman's present wardrobe to give it a fresh, new, high-end and updated look. And, of course, the pieces were so budget-friendly, women wouldn't think twice about buying an armful of them. Shelley wore The Pants Suit she which consisted of a sweater jacket worn over a turtleneck sweater and flare-legged pants. Contrast-stitched T-strapped shoes and a matching contrast-stitched tote finished her outfit. And Shelley looked chic, high-end and so gorgeous on the spread.

1983 TV Series

October was the 40th Anniversary of Shelley's second TV series, 1983's Cutter to Houston. The show was about three young doctors recruited to run a small hospital in the fictional rural town of Cutter, Texas. Shelley played Dr. Beth Gilbert, an ambitious surgeon on temporary assignment in Cutter. Beth aspired to become a heart surgeon in Houston. Jim Metzler played idealistic GP Dr. Andy Fenton, who grew up in Cutter and was glad to be back in the town that financed his medical education. Alec Baldwin played internist/ladies man Dr. Hal Wexler, who was getting through his probation, having been relegated to Cutter for being a little too fast and free with his prescriptions.

Cutter to Houston was a short-lived TV series that began airing in the fall of 1983. Although it received mixed reviews, it had great promise; plus, the cast had an easy rapport and had enough talent to carry an hour-long drama. Prior to the series, former Charlie's Angel Shelley Hack had already proven that she had acting chops, having received great reviews for her work on stage as well as on the big and small screens. Jim Metzler had a Golden Globe Award nomination under his belt for his supporting role in the 1982 feature film Tex. Alec Baldwin had come from his 1980-1982 stint in the NBC daytime soap opera The Doctors. Cutter to Houston, which was aired Saturday nights, had a difficult time finding an audience. Aside from a bad time slot, it seemed to have lost network confidence early on... "sleeper hits" were still unheard of at the time. It was first aired on October 1, 1983; and after 4 original episodes, it was announced cancelled by October 29, 1983. Replays and three more original episodes were aired until December 31, 1983.
