Angels Wardrobe 23

"Toni's Boys"

1979 was a new era for the hit TV series Charlie's Angels. Supermodel Shelley Hack joined Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd to form Charlie's glamorous new Angel team. Nolan Miller, the wardrobe designer of the series, said, "I begged Aaron to hire Shelley. There was something about her I really liked; I was impressed with her Charlie perfume commercials and how she could create a look just by turning her collar up and putting her hands in her pockets." The wardrobe budget was increased to $20,000 per episode; and, according to People magazine, each Angel was to go through eight costume changes per episode (but it was more like three to five, with Farrah making the most - at eight changes - in "Fallen Angel"). For the episode "Toni's Boys," Shelley went through three outfit changes. For her first scene, she wore a long-sleeved, periwinkle and white vertical striped tunic blouse with a self-tie belt over a pair of periwinkle-colored slacks. She finished her look with a pair of neutral-colored high-heeled sandals and accessorized her look with gold earrings, a gold necklace and an envelope style clutch bag. She wore this look for most of the episode. She next wore a khaki-colored peasant style blouse over a pair of black jeans. She finished her look with a khaki-colored vest, a black leather belt and a pair of black high-heeled sandals. She accessorized her look with a khaki-colored shoulder bag, a gold necklace, a gold pinky ring and a khaki-colored fedora with a black hat band. For the epilogue, she wore a white suit with a cherry red silk shirt. She finished her look with a red belt and a pair of red high-heeled sandals. She accessorized her look with a pair of gold earrings, a gold necklace, a gold bracelet as well as a red and gold striped pocket square.

PD Sullivan

for Night Court, 1984

In 1984, Shelley joined the cast of the nighttime sitcom Night Court for its second season (replacing Paula Kelly). She was cast to play Public Defender Christine Sullivan and the character was going to be romantically involved with Judge Harry Stone (played by Harry Anderson). Promotional pics were taken and the announcement was made; but, when the series started shooting, at the last minute, producer Reinhold Weege decided she wasn't right for the part. And Shelley felt the same way. "I liked the show. They offered me the role. I went and met with them and liked them," Shelley said. "But what happened was the role was changed somewhere between that meeting and my first day on the set," she explained. "Instead of being a funny lady, as she was in the reading, they had changed her into a straight woman," Shelley added. So, the actress and the producer mutually and amicably agreed to call the whole thing off. Ellen Foley was brought in for that season to replace Shelley - as a new character, public defender Billie Young.

Shelley was a very busy model in the 1970s. She appeared on many magazine spreads, ad campaigns and TV commercials throughout the decade. She was one of the busiest models represented by Eileen Ford. Mrs. Ford said of Shelley, "She is a very good model and an intelligent, well-educated lady." Ford added, "Modeling was just a vehicle she used to get educated. It was never a thing where she wanted to be the best model in the world. She simply became one of them despite herself." In 1974, Shelley appeared in an ad for Acqua di Selva. Acqua di Selva by Victor is a classic men's fragrance that was originally launched in 1949. The Italian cologne has been a highly popular scent from the post-WWII era onwards and has maintained a dedicated following among scent enthusiasts and fragrance collectors. Photographer Steen Svensson (credited as Steen Swenson in the ad), Shelley's then boyfriend, took the photo used in the ad. And Shelley was Supermodel gorgeous as always.
