A Press Bonanza

Shelley on the cover
of TV Guia (TV Guide) Argentina, Oct 1979

Shelley became Charlie's 5th Angel 1979 when she joined the cast of Charlie's Angels. Her character was Tiffany Welles was a classy Boston-bred (originally Connecticut-bred) policewoman who was the daughter of one of Charlie's oldest friends. "We hired her 40 percent from the screen test and 60 percent from the personality test," executive producer Aaron Spelling told TV Guide, "We decided she was a nice person with sparkle and intelligence." Her new co-Angels approved of Shelley as well. "Shelley seemed like a doll and we were going to have a lot of fun working together," Cheryl Ladd said at the time. "She was sort of like the debutante" Jaclyn Smith said about the highly-charged, energetic and intellectual East Coast girl.

Shelley appeared on cover and the pages
of the Spanish-language Argentinian magazine
TV Guia (TV Guide) in October of 1979,
in a writeup entitled
"'Everything They Have Said Is A Lie'
Shelley Hack, The New 'Angel",
Faces A Smear Campaign"

But upon the announcement of Shelley's Angel-dom, almost immediately, tongues began wagging about how Charlie's new trio were not get along and how the Angels set was in turmoil. Writeups began to come out about Cheryl not wanting Shelley in the show because she's blonde as well, about how Jaclyn didn't want Shelley cast because she was competition for the "classy Angel" title. Shelley dispelled the rumors that she didn't get along with her co-stars, saying they were "all horrible lies." "Jackie, Cheryl and I hit it off immediately." she said, "Put your ear to the wall, all you'll hear is laughter." But she was surprised by the amount of attention her casting had generated though. She said, "I was totally unprepared for the press "bonanza" that followed." She was suddenly thrust into the limelight and became a rag sheet target overnight. Suddenly, everything she did was being written - true and untrue. In 2002, she told TV Tales, "There's a downside to this stuff."
